Consistency Is Key Says Conway

Catching up with Munster winger Andrew Conway as he looks back on last weekend’s win over Treviso, and sets his sights on a regular starting position.

A constant threat going forward, the Dublin native was unlucky not to get his name on the scorecard at the Stadio Monigo last Friday night. Evasive and powerful running saw him break the Treviso defensive line and it took three defenders to hold him up right on the host’s try line. Conway looks back at a job well done in Italy.

“The last two years we were out there we came away with nothing, so after the really disappointing performance against Edinburgh and the loss, it was vital that we went out there and firstly get a performance, and secondly get a win. We are happy with the weekend’s work. The win was massive in Treviso. It’s a tough place to go. You’ll see them taking a few big scalps this season, so we are really happy we are not one of them!”

Friday night’s action also afforded the winger the opportunity to play as part a new backline combination.

“It was the first time a few of us have played together. Andrew Smith hadn’t played with everyone so he is getting used to playing with the lads. Ivan (Dineen) also had a great game, and it was myself Felix (Jones) and Zeebs (Simon Zebo) playing together for the first time this season, so it was an enjoyable night.”

The Treviso game was Conway’s second start in as many games and impressive performances have shown the management team of Anthony Foley & Co that he can bring some serious potency to a backline. Not a regular in the starting 15 during his first season with the province – that is something he hopes to change across the 2014/15 season.

“Yeah it was frustrating. A lot of it was my fault as well. Last year coming down, I was obviously very eager to get in there and impress, and play with my new teammates and earn their respect by playing. I think I got injured in a few of the games at the start and that backlogged me. When I did get in I played, and was quite happy with my performance. But with lads playing week in, week out – you won’t get on the Munster team by playing well once, you have to consistently perform and consistently be available for selection. At the back end of last year I felt I was performing consistently and well enough to be in, and it proved that I was and I got to play for the final few games last year which was great, because it would have been a very frustrating season if it had ended the way it had started.”
