Getting To Know The Munster 7s Squad

We profile the 12 players who will feature for Munster in this weekend’s Limerick World Club 7s in Thomond Park.

A mixture of Senior, Greencore Academy and Sub-academy players will face VVA Saracens Moscow, San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby (SFGGR) and Fijian outfit Daveta Rugby in three respective 14 minute matches on Saturday, ahead of the play-off stages on Sunday.

Munster 7s Squad:

Cian Bohane
The Dolphin centre has made 2 PRO12 and 11 Munster A appearances in the last two seasons and recently signed a one-year development contract extension with the province for the 2014/15 season.

Shane Buckley
Was named Academy Player of the Year last season and secured a senior development contract for the 2014/15 season. The flanker made his first senior appearance against Gloucester in Thomond Park in the SEAT Series in August '13 and has made 11 Munster A appearances in the British and Irish Cup.

Stephen Fitzgerald – Greencore Academy, year one
A full-back, he recently captained Ardscoil Rís in the 2014 SEAT Munster Schools Senior Cup Final and has lined out for both Munster and Ireland U19s. He will play his club rugby with Shannon this season as he joins the Munster Academy.

Jamie Glynn – Greencore Academy, year one
From Limerick Jamie played his schools rugby with Clongowes and previously represented Leinster at U20s level. The scrum-half played his club rugby with UCD and makes the move to Garryowen this summer. He has featured on the Irish Universities side and lined out for the Munster Development XV against Enisei STM earlier this year and joins the Greencore Munster Academy for season 2014/15.

Ned Hodson – Sub-academy
The former Midleton College player has represented Munster in the centre at U18 Schools, U19s and U20s. Playing with UCC last season he makes the move to Cork Con for season 2014/15.

Luke O’Dea
Luke has represented Munster in both the PRO12 and Heineken Cup, scoring six tries in 18 senior appearances. At ‘A’ level the winger has scored two tries in 11 appearances and O’Dea will look to impress this weekend following an injury ridden 2013/14 season.

Ryan Murphy – Greencore Academy, year three
Along with Ronan O’Mahony Ryan represented Munster at the 2012 Glasgow City Sevens. Since then the back-row has represented Ireland U20s at the Junior World Championship in France and made five British & Irish Cup appearances for Munster A.

Ronan O’Mahony
O’Mahony impressed out wide last season proving to be a thorn in the side for London Irish with a hat-trick of tries against the Exiles in September's pre-season game. He previously captained a Munster side at the Glasgow City Sevens in May 2012 and recently signed a one-year development contract extension for the 2014/15 season. With 10 PRO12 appearances and two tries Ronan has also recorded 10 tries in 25 B&I Cup appearances.

Tomás Quinlan – Sub-academy
While playing for Christian Brothers College he lined out for the Munster U18s Schools team, going on to represent Munster U19s, and is included in this year’s U20 squad. Quinlan was also selected for last year’s Ireland U19 squad. The out-half plays his club rugby with Cork Con.

Darren Sweetnam – Greencore Academy, year three
The winger/full-back will look to capitalise on the extra space afforded in the 7s game. Scored two tries in four appearances for Munster A in last season’s British & Irish Cup and represented the Irish U20s in the Junior World Championships last summer in France.

Rory Scannell – Greencore Academy, year two
Playing centre and fly-half, Scannell made his senior debut against London Irish in Musgrave Park during last season’s SEAT Series, and lined out five times for Munster A in the 2013/14 British & Irish Cup.

Gerhard van den Heever
Undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with on the 7's field, the fact the South African winger once inherited the great Bryan Habana's number 11 shirt following his departure from the Bulls gives an indication of his great pace and ability. Between PRO12 and European action, he has made 11 senior appearances and scored three tries for Munster since his arrival last season. In 2 B&I Cup games he picked up 3 tries.
