Tigers Toppled

Australia gave themselves the perfect boost ahead of their trip to Munster when they came from behind last night in Welford Road to win 26-15 against Leicester Tigers.

Tigers led 15-13, thanks to five Billy Twelvetrees penalties, with just eight minutes remaining, but Berrick Barnes landed a penalty and then a drop goal to edge his side in front and they rounded it off with a Scott Higginbotham injury time try.

The Australians – who play Munster in the Sony Ericcson Challenge at Thomond Park Stadium next Tuesday (8pm) – led 13-0 mid way through the opening half and although Munster coach Tony McGahan hadn't seen the game live, he admitted at the media briefing in UL this afternoon that it was on his to-do list for this evening.

And when the question was asked about his knowledge of the current Australian management it gave him the opportunity to wax lyrical about one of Munster's favourites sons.

Jim Williams was here for three of my years involved with Munster,” he said, ” and there's not too many foreign players that go to another country in any form of work and leave such an imprint on the environment that they've been to.

“Jim as a rugby player, as a captain, as a person and then as a coach transcended across every part of the Munster Rugby community.” McGahan said.

“I was certainly amazed in my time here that he signed more autographs than anyone else when he was on the coaching staff and there wasn't a person who had a bad word to say about him.  I think that's a tremendous reflection on him not only on his sporting ability and his ability to be within the rugby squad because that's always easy but I think he had a really strong connection outside of that.

“He had a lot of support here and that's the nature of Jim and he'll be certainly well received when he comes back here, a tremendous character and a tremendous person so I'm sure he'll have a lot of catching up to do with the various people here.

“He most certainly left his mark. Since he's gone, whenever there's a comparison made to a foreign person coming in or best foreigners or whatever, he's certainly at the top of the list. I don't think there's any doubt about that and I think he'll be there for a long period of time to come. ” McGahan concluded.
