Limerick Big Screen

The popular Big Screen will return to Limerick this weekend to bring the thrills of Munster taking on Toulouse in the Heineken Cup final live to thousands of fans on the city streets.

Limerick Big Screen

Next Saturday, a super efficient 40sq meter Big Screen will be erected at the junction of  O’Connell Street and Mallow Street to bring the Heineken Cup final live to thousands of Munster rugby fans.

“It will have a swivel screen and be 21ft higher in the air than the last Big Screen – this will allow the match to be projected further down O’Connell Street,” Mr O’Donnell said (responsible for erecting the Big Screen in 2006).

And a second screen will be erected at the junction of O’Connell Street and Cecil Street to give fans a greater view of the Heineken Cup clash.

The Big Screen is being brought  to thousands of Munster fans again thanks to the joint sponsorship of: Limerick City Council, Limerick County Council,Shannon Development and the Irish Examiner.

Traffic Restrictions

  • O’Connell Street will be closed to traffic between the junctions of Mallow Street and Roches Street from 9am on Saturday morning.
  • Upper and Lower Glentworth Street and Upper Cecil Street will be closed to traffic from 9am on Saturday morning.
  • Lower Cecil Street will be closed to traffic from 1.30pm on Saturday.

However, traffic will be able to come up O’Connell Street from the Sarsfield Street junction to the Roches Street junction and William Street and Roches Street will also be open.

Mr O’Donnell said: “We regret any inconvenience the road closures may cause people and we will be contacting all those businesses that will be affected before Saturday.”

The Gardai will be patrolling the streets on Saturday and no alcohol will be allowed into the area where the crowds are watching the Big Screen.

Entertainment will start at 3pm before the Heineken Cup match and edited highlights of Munster’s previous matches this season will also be shown. And Live 95Fm will be broadcasting from the downtown streets.
