Munster Provide The Majority of Ireland’s World Cup Squad

Brian Carney and Alan Quinlan were among 12 Munster players named today as part of Ireland’s Rugby World Cup Squad.

There was never any doubt about the inclusion of the other ten Munster players with the general perception being that Quinlan and Carney needed to acquit themselves well against Scotland yesterday to fight off some stiff opposition for a place in the final make-up of the squad.

In Quinlan’s case it was probably a case of not doing much wrong rather than doing much right and in any event it was clear by the end, given how those around him were performing, he had done enough. He certainly ensured he would be noticed, wearing a white band around his scrum cap, looking for all the world like one of those American army MPs.

Carney on the other hand sported a tight haircut and looked as fit as a fiddle in his figure hugging outfit. He didn’t have a lot to do but what he did he did well. When in possession, Carney looks to attack and does not lose the ball in contact.

The bad news of course for player and squad alike was the injury sustained by Shane Horgan in the warm-up while the good news was the performance at full-back of Geordan Murphy who was quite superb throughout. Horgan has been named but may miss some of the earlier Pool games.

The RWC squad head off to southern France today for a four day warm weather training camp.
