Munster Move To Fifth

Munster’s bonus point victory in Murrayfield on Friday night moves them to fifth place in the table with just the game against Glasgow Warriors at Musgrave Park next Saturday remaining.

And given that they spent a lot of the season at the basement end of the table their recent rise is particularly encouraging. In attacking terms, Munster were much the livelier side all night, Lifeimi Mafi and Barry Murphy causing all sorts of problems for the Edinburgh midfield while their dominance at the point of contact prompted the Edinburgh coach Lynn Howells to admit, “It’s the third game in a row where we have been outmuscled. We seemed to be doing an awful lot of tackling and it did take its toll in the end”.

Edinburgh were still very much in the game at half time at which stage they trailed 16-9 but inspired by the presence of fit again Paul O’Connell, Munster made the most of their possession to run in two tries to put the issue beyond doubt.

“We kept ourselves in the game but we didn’t put points in the board when we had our chances,” said Howells, ” You just can’t defend as much as we are having to at the moment. You can’t play rugby on the back foot and that’s what we are trying to do.”

Prior to kick-off, home officials had expressed the hope that the final home game of the season combined with the drawing power of the opposition might attract the biggest crowd of the season but those expectations weren’t met, only 3,129 bothering to turn up making one wonder why the home side continue to use this as a venue.
