IRFU LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE REPORT 2006

The Munster Development Office ran the annual level 1 Coaching Course on 26-28 May 2006. The course was held in the University of Limerick. It was a very successful weekend for coaches and tutors. In total 39 coaches took part from North Munster. A second level 1 course will run in Cork on 25-27 August 2006. For applications please contact Fiona Murphy in the Development Office on 021 4323693 or e-mail developmentoffice@munsterrugby.ie.

We had great quality tutors working with us, including Jim Williams, Brian Hickey, Brian Walsh, Bryan Hyland, Phillip Rees and Colin Moran.

I felt that the coaches challenged the tutors and themselves, who will in turn challenge the players they coach.

The new Long Term Player Development Module was introduced and all coaches were very supportive of the initiative which sets out a development pathway for players fro age six to six nations.

On Friday the coaches were introduced to the principles of play by Phillip Rees, they then did individual skills with our RDOs and professional staff, followed by Skill Development with Colin Moran.

On Saturday Brian Hickey went through the Lineout and Maul and Jim Williams took the ruck/breakdown module. Bryan Hyland went through Scrum and Role of the Coach. Ken Lyons the Branch President visited the coaches at lunchtime and spoke with the coaches.

Garrett Fitzgerald and Ken Lyons of the Munster Branch very graciously gave us tickets for all coaches for the Munster v Cardiff match in Thomond Pk.

On Sunday Dave McHugh visited the coaches and spoke about the refereeing aspect of the game and Declan Kidney also spoke about his role as a coach, and how he too started out as a Level 1 coach. We hope that the experiences from the weekend will inspire all our coaches to reach those levels.

I would like to thank all coaches, players and volunteers for a great season, and hope that all of you enjoy the summer and recharge the batteries for next season.

Yours in Sport
