Weekend action from Old Crescent RFC.

OLD CRESCENT RFC NEWS

Our 1st XV hosted Shannon in a friendly on Saturday afternoon. It was a very strong Shannon side on view with many of their contracted players taking part. This was a hard fought and bruising encounter with no quarter being asked or given and was a very useful exercise. Being such a hard game brought its downside with our team suffering a number of injuries. It finished 28 points to 17 to the visitors but this was a very strong and committed performance which will hopefully stand to them in the coming weeks. This weekend the focus turns to the ODM Munster Senior Challenge Cup where we travel to Temple Hill in Cork to play Cork Con on Saturday.

Our 3rd XV also hosted Shannon in a friendly and it was very much an experimental side which was fielded by Eugene O’ Riordan and his management team. Shannon were the better side in the first half helped to an extent by weak defence from our side. At the interval it was 17 -0 to Shannon but it was a different Crescent team that took the field in the second half. The majority of the second half was played in the Shannon half of the pitch, but a combination of hard luck and handling error resulting in our side not getting the points that their dominance deserved. They finally crossed late on in the game to leave the score at full time 24 points to 7 in favour of Shannon. Their competitive season gets underway this coming Saturday with a trip to Fitzgerald Park to play Thomond at 2.30pm.

Our under 20s travelled to Nenagh to play in a friendly and were deserving winners by 21 points to 7. This group of players ably assisted by their management team of Mike Mullins and the two Murphys, Adrian & Michael have already put in a lot of hard work already this season and this along with the experience gained by many of them playing in last year’s AIL and in New Zealand during the summer should position them for a good run in Division 1 of the under 20 AIL Ireland league this season. This weekend see the start of the North Munster League where they too travel to Fitzgerald Park to play Thomond with a noon kick off.

On the under age front, the under 15 league game against Newport was postponed, the under 14 were defeated 11-0 by Ennis on Sunday at the Crescent Comprehensive and the under 12s had their first blitz of the season against Shannon & Richmond. This weekend our under 9s are on the road travelling to play Shannon, Richmond & Kilrush while our under 11 host the same clubs at Rosbrien.

We ask all parents to return their registration forms as soon as possible to the their children’s coaches. The planning for our Club Day continues and it looks like Sunday October 2nd will be a very enjoyable afternoon for all who visit the club. More information on the event will be posted in the coming weeks.
