The Bay of Plenty Steamers will be hoping for some of their Ranfurly Shield winning magic from 2004 when they face the Lions in their tour opener in Rotorua on Saturday night.

Bay of Plenty upset Auckland 33-28 at the start of last year’s NPC to kick off a passionate season that took them to the NPC semifinals, and they will need all their team spirit against the Lions.

The Super 12 players have only just joined the Steamers’ squad with the 30-strong group meeting in Mount Maunganui on Sunday while coach Vern Cotter didn’t join the team until Tuesday after helping the Crusaders to their fifth Super 12 title.

But with a solid core of the side coming from the Chiefs, such as captain Wayne Ormond, lock Bernie Upton and halfback Kevin Senio, they will be hoping to continue the Chiefs’ form from the end of the Super 12 and re-ignite the spark the Steamers found in 2004.

The Lions won 34-16 the last time the two teams clashed back in 1983 but they have also had a limited build up to their first match in New Zealand, with just two trainings before arriving in the country on Friday.

Bay of Plenty name their side on Wednesday for the sold out match that kicks off at 7:10pm on Saturday.
