Lions Set Off For New Zealand.

The British & Irish Lions set out today from London’s Heathrow Airport on the first leg of their long haul to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland on Friday at midday.

The British & Irish Lions set out today from London’s Heathrow Airport on the first leg of their long haul to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland on Friday at midday.

They will play their first game of the 11 match tour against Bay of Plenty at at Rotorua on the 4th of June.

Three of the 45 strong playing squad, Welsh pair Gareth Thomas and Stephen Jones and England’s Jason Robinson will travel out at a later date.

Thomas and Jones have club commitments in France while Robinson has been granted leave to stay with his pregnant wife.

Meanwhile, the Barbarians, with six Irishmen in the starting line-up proved no match whatsoever for Scotland in Pittrodrie last night.

The tourists, who included Brian Lima, were hammered 38-7, their only try coming from prop Andrea Lo Cicero in the 25th minute.

Replacements: R Ibanez (France), C Visagie, S Boome (both South Africa), J O’Connor (Ireland), M Robinson (New Zealand), T Castaignede (France), K Logan (Scotland).
