For the past five weeks, Shannon R.F.C. s grounds in Coinage have played host to a feast of primary schools Mini-rugby, with the last games scheduled for Wednesday 16th March

For the past five weeks, Shannon R.F.C. s grounds in Coinage have played host to a feast of primary schools Mini-rugby. Every Wednesday, ten teams, representing eight Limerick city schools descended on the grounds to participate in a series of games.

The ten teams are divided into A and B sections. Teams from the larger schools compete in the A section. These teams include Scoil Ide (Corgally), St. Nessan s (Mungret), Monaleen N.S., J.F.K N.S. (Ennis Road) agus Mhodelscoil, O Connell Avenue. The B section is made up of teams from St. Mary s B.S., Gaelscoil Sarseil, Corpus Christi (Moyross), as well as B teams from Scoil Ide and St. Nessan s.

The competition is run under the rules of level three mini-rugby. This is the second year running that these series of games have been played and they have proved to be both highly successful and enjoyable. The main aim of the competition is to provide and opportunity for primary school children to represent their school on the field of play, as well as allowing them to hone their skills. The games honour the I.R.F.U s wish that games at this level be played in a friendly and competitive nature, with enjoyment the main priority.

This season s series of games will conclude this Wednesday, March 16th, (3.30 5.00p.m.), with the final games from each section being played.

Great thanks must be extended to Shannon Rugby Club for the use of their grounds and to Eddie Price, Youth Development Officer with the I.R.F.U., who has been extremely generous with his time. Thanks must also be extended to the schools involved, as well as their teachers, coaches and principles, who were always willing to assist the children participating. These people have been extremely co-operative by facilitating the organisers in any way they could. Without people like these, Limerick Primary Schools Mini-Rugby would not be the great success it is. The chief organisers, who deserve huge praise are Fergal O Mainin, (Gaelscoil Sarseil), and his tireless assistant Ray Darcy, (Scoil Ide), who have both put a huge effort into the running of this very enjoyable event. They are expecting this competition to be bigger and better next term, with more schools already showing interest in participating.
