Killarney secured victory against Newport in the Munster Junior Plate Final giving them their first Provincial title.

The two Munster clubs involved in the Ulster Bank League faired poorly at the weekend. Thomond who could have secured their place in Division 2A next season failed at home to DLSP when they went down 28-10. John Sheehan scored Thomond’s try and Desmond Fitzgerald kicked a conversion and penalty.

Highfield lost away to Banbridge 31-5 in Division Three with Derek Houlihan scoring the Cork side’s try. This result ends any hopes Nenagh Ormond had of making the play off.

Killarney made history with their first Provincial title after they defeated Newport 10-3 at Musgrave Park to win the Munster Junior Plate. The Kerry side led 10-0 at half time with a try from Adrian Hegarty and a conversion and penalty by Padraig Sheahan. Newport dominated the exchanges after the break but a solid Killarney defence held firm and limited the Tipperary side to three penalty kicks one of which Micheal Ryan converted.

The four quarter finals of the Munster Seconds League were all decided with victories for the four home sides. U.C.C. over came Young Munster 27-24 in an exciting contest at Curaheen Road. Johnny Buckley scored two tries for the students and Mark O’Mahony and Luke Duffy got one each with Duffy kicking two conversions and a penalty. David Sheehan, Donal Murphy, Ger Flaherty and Declan Brown scored tries for the visitors and Brown converted two.

Cork Constitution had a big win over Shannon at Temple Hill winning 64-8. Eoin O’Donnell scored three tries, Cyprian Jouve two and Cathal Quinn, Alex Ryan, Des Murray, Tim Dukelow and Brian Cagney one each. Ryan added three conversions and O’Donnell and Jouve kicked two conversions. John Deegan was Shannon’s try scorer and Ritchie Mullane kicked a penalty.

Thomond defeated Sunday’s Well 29-7 at Fitzgerald Park. This was a close contest until the Limerick side pulled ahead in the final quarter. Dean O’Brien, Michael O’Donnell, Pat Deedigan, Ritchie Ryan and Wayne Mullaney were Thomond’s try scorers and Geoff Ryan kicked two conversions. Michael Carew scored the Well’s try and Kenny Barry converted

Holders U.L. Bohemian defeated Dolphin 42-12. Sean McKeown and Harry Fleming scored tries for Dolphin and Mark O’Driscoll kicked a conversion.

Newcastle West booked their place in the final of the Transfield Cup against Richmond after their 13-6 home win over Presentation. Two penalties from Mark Phair had Presentation 6-3 ahead at half time. Sean Neville replied with a penalty for the home side. Tom Kelleher levelled the scores with a second penalty for the West Limerick side. A try by Niall Kennedy and a conversion by Kelleher booked Newcastle West their place in the decider.

Midleton defeated Waterford City 25-8 to reach the semi finals of the O’Neill Cup. Two tries by Kieran Wall and one by Kieran Byrnes and a conversion by Paul Daly had Midleton 17-0 ahead at half time. Mike Sinclair scored another try for the home side after the break and Daly kicked a penalty. Lenny Power replied with a try for Waterford and Darren Walsh kicked a penalty.

Clanwilliam defeated Clonmel 22-14 in the Garryowen Cup. Clanwilliam led 15-0 at half time with tries from Brian O’Rahilly and Ian Quinlan and a conversion and penalty by Brian Kissane. O’Rahilly added another try after the break and Kissane converted. Morgan Lyons and Kieran Lyons replied with tries for Clonmel and Danny Lyons converted both.

Cashel after their exciting 9-9 draw in the Webb Cup final in mid week with Garryowen followed it up with a narrow 18-17 home win over Clonakilty to reach the semi finals of the Munster Junior Two League Cup. Eric White put Clonakilty ahead with a penalty but a try from Darren McGlinchey and a penalty by Dermot O’Brien had Cashel 8-3 in front at half time. Adrian Fleming restored Clonakilty’s lead with a try which White converted. Tries by Ger O’Sullivan and John Maher made it 18-10 for Cashel and in a late Clonakilty rally the visitors Olan Hayes scored a try and White converted but the Tipperary side held on for victory.

Dolphin defeated Richmond 33-5 at Musgrave Park. Mark Long, Richard Kidney, Gearoid Magner, Larry Buckley and Neill Potts all scored tries for Dolphin and Pat Ahern kicked four conversions.

Shannon beat Tralee 19-5 in the other quarter final and will face Ballincollig in next week’s semi final.

Dunmanway won the George O’Connell Cup with a 10-3 win over Muskerry at Ballyanly. Conor Pullin scored two tries in the opening ten minutes for the winners and Rob O’Keeffe replied with a penalty for Muskerry.

Ballincollig defeated Skibbereen 32-18 to reach the quarter finals of the Dave Dineen Cup. Shane Campbell, Podge Flynn, Dave Dineen, Dave Baston and Kevin Ryan all scored tries for Ballincollig and Ryan kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Mallow booked their place in the final with a 26-20 away win over Dungarvan. Dave O’Leary, Steven Neville, Conor O’Donovan and Jim Flynn scored tries for Mallow and Martin O’Connor kicked two penalties.

Old Christians reached the final of the Paul Twomey Cup with an 18-10 win over Kinsale at Rathcooney. Gavin Murphy and Scott Vickery score tries for the home side and Conor Mangan kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Ballincollig won the South Munster Junior Three League title with a 29-20 away win over Fermoy. Paul Dinneen was the star for Ballincollig scoring a try, three conversions and a penalty. Will Schubert, Padraig Bohane and Danny McSwiney also scored tries for the winners.

Cork Transport booked their place in the final of the Tait Cup with an 18-0 win over Bantry Bay at the Cornfield. Mark Bevan, Andy Ahern and Isaac Stillwell scored tries for the ‘Port and Aherne kicked a penalty.

Transport will face Mitchelstown in the decider after the north Cork side defeated Douglas 18-17 in the other semi final.
