Weekend preview 24th October

There is a full series of AIB All Ireland League games listed for Saturday in what is a very busy weekend.

The big game of the day will be at Musgrave Park on Saturday when Dolphin host Shannon in Division 1A. The Cork side have won their opening two games and are a point behind the leaders, where Shannon have lost both their games but did pick up a losing bonus point in both ties. The home side will be confident of another win but taughts of a third successive defeat will drive Shannon on.

Cork Constitution travel to the early pace setters Blackrock College and after a few indifferent performances in recent weeks the Temple Hill side will have to produce a top class performance if they hope to get something from this tie.

Second placed St. Mary’s College travel to Garryowen, the first of two visits to this venue in the coming weeks and the Limerick side will be hoping to reproduce the form they showed in their opening game against Shannon.

The two bottom sides U.L. Bohemian and Clontarf meet at Thomond Park. The Limerick side have shown a dip in form in recent weeks; where Clontarf will be boosted by last week’s big win over Old Crescent at Rosbrien. Neither side can afford any more slip ups at this early stage of the season.

Young Munster welcome Division 1B leaders Old Belvedere to Tom Clifford Park. The Dublin side have maximum points from their two opening games and the home side will be anxious to inflict a first defeat of the season on their visitors.

U.C.C. travel to Galwegians in search of their first win of the campaign and seem to be improving with every outing and could make things difficult for the home side.

The big game in the Second Division is the meeting of second placed U.C.D. at home to Third placed Thomond. This will be a big test for the Limerick side who will do well not to return home empty handed.

There is a local derby at Rosbrien when Old Crescent take on Bruff. The visitors are going through an injury crisis at the moment but put up a credible performance last week away to Mary’s in the Cup. Crescent are without a win but look to have their work cut out if they are to break their duck.

Clonakilty face a difficult task away to high flying Lansdowne at the RDS. The West Cork side have yet to win this season and it looks like they may have to wait another while before ending that sequence.

Highfield make the long journey to Belfast to face Malone. They have still to pick up a point in this campaign and while the odds are against them, they have the ability and with a bit of luck could snatch something from this encounter.

In the Third Division Midleton travel to leaders Navan. The Meath side have made a great start to their campaign following their elevation from Junior rugby last season. Midleton have won both their games and know that they will be in for a tough afternoon.

The other two Munster sides in this Division meet when Nenagh Ormond host Sunday’s Well. The Cork side slipped up at home to Wanderers last time out and with home advantage the Tipperary side will fancy their chances of taking the spoils.

The second series of games in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League will be decided over the weekend and after last weeks shocks there should be plenty of excitement.

The game of the day must be Tralee’s home tie with Richmond. The Kerry side were the only outfit to collect maximum points last week and Richmond shocked the defending champions Cashel with a 12-3 victory. A win for either side would be a big boost to their title aspirations but home advantage could see Tralee edge it.

Cashel will want to get their campaign back on track with a home win over Skibbereen. The West Cork side were disappointed not to have won at home to Kilfeacle last week, but will hope to field a stronger side this week and will not make things easy for the home side.

Clonmel after their shock defeat by St. Senan’s last week will hope to bounce back to winning ways with a home victory over Crosshaven and it would be a big blow if they failed to pick up the points.

Waterpark who made hard work of brushing aside the challenge of Ballincollig last week, will have it all to do on Sunday when they travel to Kilfeacle. The home side will relish the opportunity of taking a big scalp and on current form are quite capable of doing it.

The two promoted sides Ballincollig and St. Senan’s meet at Tanner Park. The Clare side cook a hoop after last week’s victory will hope to reverse last year’s defeat by the Cork side, but Ballincollig having performed well against Waterpark last week will be confident of collecting the points.

The Cobh Pirates Thurles tie has bee switched to Saturday with a 3.00 kick off and after last week’s poor showing against Tralee, the Pirates will be expecting to pick up the points.

The Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final will be decided in Fermoy on Sunday when Carrick-on-Suir and Mallow go head to head. These sides met two weeks ago in an exciting league tie with home advantage giving Carrick’ the edge by a single point. Another close encounter can be expected and it would be no surprise if Mallow reversed that league result.

Kanturk and Youghal meet in the semi final of the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield at the Duhallow venue. Both sides have had mixed fortunes so far this season and a win would be a big boost to either side. Youghal on their day should advance but any over confidence could be punished by the home side.

There is a full series of games in both the North and Southern sections of the Munster Seconds League.
