Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup

Plenty of drama in the Munster Junior Cup as Holders Garryowen snatch a last minute extra time try to defeat St. Senan’s, Clonmel defeated Cork Constitution and only one Munster Junior Plate game was played out of the ten scheduled.

Second Division champions St Senan’s came close to causing the upset of the season in the Munster Junior Cup as they were pipped in the final minute of extra time. With each side having scored four tries, Senan’s would have advanced on the first try rule, but a try by Cian O’Shea which Eamonn Connolly converted gave Garryowen a 34-27 victory.

A try by Brian Collins and a penalty by Declan Rowe had the Clare side 8-7 ahead at half time. Steve McMahon replying for Garryowen with a try which Connolly converted. David Webb extended Senan’s lead with a try and Rowe converted. A penalty, try and conversion by Connolly saw Garryowen take the lead 17-15. Joey Purcell extended the holders advantage with a try but the Clare side hit back with a try from Neil McDonagh and Rowe’s conversion sent the game into extra time.

There was no score in the first period of extra time but Jack Donovan put Garryowen in front with a try. David Dunne levelled with a try for Senan’s, before O’Shea’s winner decided this epic contest.

Clonmel caused the shock of the day defeating Cork Constitution 13-7 at Temple Hill. Conor Cooney put the visitors ahead with a penalty after twelve minutes. Eoin O’Donnell scored a try for Constitution on forty minutes which Gearoid O’Suilleabhain converted. Clonmel hit back immediately and Luke Hogan got in for a try which Cooney converted for a 10-7 half time lead. The only score of the second half was a penalty for Clonmel by Cooney.

A last minute penalty from Brian Kissane earned Clanwilliam a 13-10 home win over local rivals Kilfeacle. Kissane gave Clanwilliam a 3-0 interval lead with a penalty, but a penalty by Shane Heuston and a conversion of a penalty try made it 10-3 in favour of Kilfeacle. David Keenan levelled with a try for the home side and Kissane converted before his last minute winning kick.

Clonakilty defeated U.C.C. 23-8 at the Mardyke with tries from Peter Shallow and Luke O’Shea. David Lombard kicked two conversions and three penalties. Jack Robertson replied with a try for the Students and Steve Dinan kicked a penalty.

U.L Bohemian overcame Galbally 33-10. Rob Buckley scored a try and four conversions for the winners and Finbar Ryan, Ciaran Harte, Sam Sterling and Shane Airey got a try each. Brendan Childs and Shane Enright replied with tries for Galbally.

On Thursday night last Cashel defeated Muskerry 25-13 after extra time. The Tipperary side led 10-6 at half time with a try by Pat O’Connor and a conversion and penalty by Ross Mullane. Darragh Masterson replied with two penalties. Mullane added another penalty for the home side but a try by Jonathan Buckley converted by Masterson sent the game into extra time. Muskerry were getting on top in the forward exchanges and when the game went to non contested scrums because of injuries to both Cashel’s hookers, the home side advanced with tries by Mullane and Kieran Murphy.

Skibbereen received a walk over from Old Christians to book their place in the last eight which will be an open draw.

Only one of the ten games scheduled in the Munster Junior Plate went ahead as Bruff defeated Richmond 23-16. Darragh Clancy scored a try, conversion, and three penalties for Richmond.

Walk overs were given in the other nine ties.

Cork Constitution qualified for the Frazer McMullan All Ireland Under 20 Cup after their 16-13 home win over Lansdowne. Conor Cunningham scored Con’s try and Thomas Quinlan kicked a conversion and three penalties. Con’ will now face Terenure College in the final next Saturday in Clonmel which will kick off at 3pm.

Bandon won the South Munster Junior Two League final defeating Corca Dhuibhne 20-17 at Musgrave Park. Scott Kingston and Rob Wilmott scored tries for Bandon and Andrew Willis converted both and added two penalties. Mikey Flannery replied with two tries for the West Kerry Gaeltacht side and Shane Griffin converted both and also added a penalty.

Three penalties from Ian Jones was not enough for Cobh Pirates who lost at home to Dolphin 12-9 in the Junior Two Cup South.

Muskerry booked their place in the final of the Dave Dineen Cup with a 20-5 victory over Shandon. Robert Desmond and Jason Fallon scored tries for Muskerry and Cillian Masterson added two conversions and two penalties.

Kanturk reached the last four with a 28-10 win over Iveragh. Kevin Sweeney, David Fitzpatrick and Shane McCall scored tries for Kanturk and Dave McAulliffe added two conversions and three penalties. Shane McGilicuddy and Seamus Scotch replied with tries for Iveragh.

Dunmanway-Bantry Bay reached the final of the Junior 3 Cup South after their 27-3 away win over Bandon. Colm O’Brien scored two tries for the winners and Damien Hicks got one. Albert Green kicked three conversions and two penalties.
