Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup

Kanturk finished second in the All Ireland Provincial League as Thomond booked a place in the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Cup.

Kanturk assured themselves a play off next week against Instonians to decide the final place in next season’s Ulster Bank League Division 2B following their 18-7 home win over Clogher Valley which saw then finish as runners up to Wanderers.

This was sweet revenge for the Duhallow side who had lost 10-9 to the Tyrone side in the All Ireland Junior Cup back in October. Three first half tries from Kealan Buckley, John Duggan and Mark Healy and a Healy penalty had Kanturk 18-7 ahead at half time. They failed to add to their tally in the second half as the Ulster Champions dominated territorially and this will be a worry for Kanturk ahead of their trip to Belfast next week.
Thomond booked their place in the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Cup and a trip to Clanwilliam next week after they defeated Newcastle West 15-13. Two tries from Martin Casey and a conversion and a penalty by Martin Ryan had Thomond 15-10 in front at half time. Eamon Lane scored a try for the visitors which Alan Roche converted and Sean Herlihy added a penalty. Roche kicked a penalty for Newcastle West after the break but it was not enough to stay in the competition.

Skibbereen advanced to the semi final of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup after their 35-13 win over Old Christians at Rathcooney. Denis McCarthy scored two tries for the winners and Richie Byrne, Cian Keegan and Mike Dyring got one each. Ger Hurley kicked two conversions and two penalties. Alan O’Connell replied with a try for Old Christians and Stuart Lee kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Newport moved off the foot of the table in Division Two of the Munster Junior League after an 8-8 draw with Thurles. Darragh Ryan scored a try and a penalty for Newport and Eoghan O’Dwyer replied with a try and a penalty for Thurles.

Tralee defeated Bruff 31-5 in the Munster Junior Plate. TJ O’Sullivan scored two tries for Tralee and Eoin O’Carroll, Fearghal O’Nuillain and Gareth Walsh got a try each. Walsh kicked three conversions.

St Mary’s beat Waterpark 40-6. Ben Seargent contributed a try and five conversions to Mary’s tally, Greg Barry got two tries and John McNamara, Marcus Costello and Matthew Hickey got one each. Paddy Kiersey replied with two penalties for Waterpark.

Ballincollig and Douglas booked their place in the semi finals of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup.
Ballincollig had a narrow 20-17 home win over Charleville. Dave Power, Paudge Bohane and Robert Foulkes scored tries for Ballincollig and Kevin Doyle kicked a conversion and a penalty. John O’Neill and Tiernan Browne replied with tries for Charleville and Bobby Rea converted both and also kicked a penalty. Ballincollig will now travel to Dungarvan in the semi final.

The other semi final will be between Douglas and Carrick-on-Suir after Douglas defeated Fermoy 26-8. Douglas led 6-3 at half time with two penalties from Eoin Philpott to one by Dylan Foley. Philpott, Steve Neville and Barry Hynes scored tries for Douglas in the second half and Philpott added a conversion and a penalty. Fermoy’s only reply was a try by Peter Hughes.

Clonakilty booked their place in the final of the Cork County Cup with a 22-13 win over Muskerry at Ballyanly. A try from JD O’Mahony and a conversion and a penalty by Dave Lombard gave Clonakilty a 10-5 half time lead. Pat Rourke scored a try for the home side. Courtney Canning and Mark Purcell scored further tries for the west Cork side and Lombard added a conversion. Lorcan Collins replied with a try for Muskerry and Darragh Masterson kicked a penalty.

Newly Junior Two League South champions Bandon defeated Cork Constitution 22-17 in the South Junior Two Cup. Pat Prendergast scored two tires for Bandon and Mark Phelan one. Andrew Willis added two conversions and a penalty. Kieran O’Connor replied with a try for Constitution and Simon Barry kicked four penalties.

Highfield will now face Bandon in the semi final after their 20-17 home win over Waterpark. Darren Walsh, Donal Moriarty and Mark Spillet were Highfield’s try scorers and Dave Eustace kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Clonmel booked their place in the final after their 26-12 away win over Dolphin. Mick Barry, Paul Denn and Conor Tobin scored tries for Clonmel, Dylan Cadogan kicked two penalties and Colm O’Connell added a conversion and a penalty.

Cobh Pirates won the Mick Barry Cup final with a 14-3 win over Kinsale. Fintan Lawton gave Kinsale a 3-0 half time lead but tries by Jack Barrett and Cillian Barry both converted by Ian Jones saw Cobh come out on top.

Cork Constitution won the All Ireland Under 20 Frazer McMullen Cup for the first time when they defeated Terenure College in the final at Clonmel. Thomas Quinlan kicked four penalties for the Temple Hill side.

Corca Dhuibhne won the Galwey Foley Cup defeating Iveragh 31-5 in the final. Ciaran Slattery and Billy O’Connor scored two tries each for the winners and Micheal Breathnach got one and Shane Griffin kicked three conversions. Chris O’Sullivan replied with a try for Iveragh.
