Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

The weather caused nine of the Munster Junior Cup ties scheduled for this weekend to be postponed and this will now throw the competition into chaos as dates will have to be found to play these games.

Of the six games that did go ahead it was the senior sides that emerged victorious in four of the five ties.

All Ireland Junior Cup holders Crosshaven were the only junior side to buck the trend but they needed a try in the last play of the game to defeat Midleton 15-14 at the Towns Park. Crosshaven opened the scoring with a try by Jake Grey but former Cork All Ireland hurler Diarmuid O’Sullivan put Midleton ahead with a try which Kieran Burns converted to leave the home side 7-5 ahead at half time. The visitors regained the lead with a try from Niall Cogan but Burns had Midleton back in front 14-10 with a try and conversion. In the final play of the game Cian Keegan got in for a try for Crosshaven which will now see the Seasiders travel to the winners of the Bruff Cashel tie.

Shannon had to pull out all the stops to see off a brave challenge from Second Division side Newcastle West to emerge 21-9 winners. Shannon led 7-6 at half time with a try from Cillian O’Neill which Ben Sargent converted. Alan Roche replied with two penalties for the home side and also saw another effort rebound off the post. Aaron Spring extended Shannon’s advantage with a try and Sargent converted. Roche kicked his third penalty to keep the home side in touch and a late rally by Newcastle West was thwarted in the final minute when Brian Downey intercepted and raced under the posts for Shannon’s third try which Sargent converted.

Thomond defeated Waterpark 29-6 at Newtown Schools pitch because Ballinakill was deemed unplayable. David Quinn and Pat Deedigan scored tries for Thomond and Craig Airey converted both and added five penalties. Tom Kiersey replied with two penalties for Waterpark. Thomond will now away to Shannon in the next round.

A stronger Young Munster pack proved too much for Cobh Pirates at the Paddocks. The visitors led 13-6 at half time with a try from Declan Brown and a conversion and two penalties from Brian Haugh to two Eamon Ronan penalties. Jake Considine and Shane O’Leary added further tries in the second half and Haugh converted both to give Young Munster a 27-6 victory. The Cookies must now await the winners of the Galbally Cork Constitution tie in the next round.

Dolphin switched their game from Musgrave Park to the Mahon but still proved too strong for Clanwilliam winning 20-7. Lar Coughlan, Doug Abbott and Niall Barry scored tries for Dolphin and Paddy Moakley kicked a conversion and penalty. Brian O’Rahilly replied with a try for Clanwilliam and Derek Shields converted. Dolphin must now travel to the winners of the Old Christians Tralee clash in the next round.

Skibbereen received a walk over from Thurles and they must now await the winners of the Mallow U.C.C. clash.

In the all senior club tie Garryowen defeated U.L. Bohemian at Annacotty 22-0. John Griffin and Jack O’Donovan scored first half tries for the Dooradoyle side and Shane O’Brien kicked a conversion and penalty for a 15-0 half time lead. A third try from Aaron Healy converted by O’Brien will now see the Light Blues travelling to the winners of the Kanturk St. Mary’s tie.

Two games were played in the Munster Junior Plate with victories for Abbeyfeale and Dungarvan.

Abbeyfeale defeated Ballincollig 24-7 at Tanner Park. Rory Owens scored a try for the home side and Conor McCarthy converted. Abbeyfeale replied with tries from Thomas Enright, Micheal Enright and Micheal Roche and Thomas Enright converted all three and also added a penalty.

Dungarvan edged out Douglas 18-12. David O’Riordan and Stephen Slater were try scorers for the winners and David Hickey kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Only one game went ahead in the Munster Junior Bowl and that saw Charleville come from 8-0 down to beat Waterford City 25-8. The visitors got off to a great start and led 8-0 after ten minutes with a drop goal from Aaron Foskin and a try by Kieran Crowley. A try by Damian Leahy converted by Shane Corkery left Charleville trailing 8-7 at half time. Tony Moffatt and Brian Buckley scored second half tries and Corkery converted both and also kicked a penalty.

Carrigaline got sweet revenge for their Dennehy Cup Final defeat by Old Christians when they defeated the Rathcooney side 11-8 in their final pool game in the Junior Two League South. Steve Caul scored a try for the winners and John Tait added two penalties.
In the semi finals Carrigaline will be at home to Skibbereen and Cork Constitution will play Dolphin.
