Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Both Skibbereen and Mallow lost their unbeaten records as seven games were postponed due to the weather across all three divisions of the Munster Junior League.

Richmond have opened up a five point gap at the top of Division One after their 13-9 home win over Skibbereen. The home side did the damage in the opening half with a penalty from Jonathon Ford and tries by Garrett O’Hanlon and Pat Humphrey for a 13-6 interval lead. Ger Hurley replied with three penalties for the visitors. Skibbereen were camped in the Richmond Twenty two for long periods but could not breech a solid Richmond defence.

Kanturk moved into second place with a 25-18 home win over St. Senan’s. Tries by Peter Earley and John O’Sullivan and a Darragh Meade conversion had the Duhallow side 12-10 ahead at half time. Daragh McCoy replied with a try for the Clare side and Declan Collins kicked a conversion and penalty. Meade added a penalty after the break and tries by Daithi Fitzpatrick and replacement Peter McCabe secured the bonus point for Kanturk. Ian Fitzgerald replied with a try for Senan’s and Collins kicked a penalty.

Galbally maintained their challenge with a 32-3 away win over Clanwilliam. Tries by James Taylor and Stephen Bourke and a conversion by Sean Burke and a penalty by Darren Guerin had Galbally 15-0 ahead at the break. Eoin Burke added two tries in the second half and Niall McNamara got one with Sean Burke kicking one conversion. Brian Kissane replied with a penalty for Clanwilliam.

Crosshaven caused a surprise with a 15-7 away win over Clonmel. A penalty by Daryl Foley gave Crosshaven a 3-0 interval lead. Kieran Doran and Darren O’Keeffe added tries after the break and Doran added a conversion. Ronan Cross scored a consolation try for Clonmel in the final minute and Danny Lyons converted.

Cobh Pirates won their bottom of the table clash with Thurles 39-6. The home side led 13-6 at half time. John Barry Murphy and Eamon Ronan each scored two tries for the winners and John Kidney got one. Ronan kicked four conversions and two penalties

Trailing 3-0 to a penalty by John Flynn at half time, Kilfeacle staged a great come back to beat Waterpark 19-3. Michael Heffernan and Pat Ryan scored tries for Kilfeacle who were also awarded a penalty try. Josh Featherstone converted two of the tries. .

The Tralee Old Christians tie was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Four games scheduled in Division Two were also postponed, Castleisland v Ennis, Killarney v Youghal, Presentation v Bandon and Scariff at home to Newcastle West. Two games in Division Three also fell victim to the weather, they were Killorglin v Carrick-on-Suir and Kilrush at home to Abbeyfeale.

Kinsale ended Mallow’s unbeaten run in Division Two with a 24-17 home victory. Three penalties by Dave Walsh and a drop goal by Robbie Doyle had Mallow 12-9 ahead at half time. Paul Perez replied with three penalties for the home side. Perez added two tries after the break and Renaud Sergere one for the winners and Frankie Thornton secured a losing bonus point for the visitors with a try.

St. Mary’s kept up their challenge with a maximum point win over Ballincollig at Corbally on a 24-5 scoreline. St. Mary’s led 19-0 at half time with tries from Sean Lipper, Barry Duggan and Brian Purcell and two conversions by Sean Lyons. Ballincollig put up a gallant performance in the second half and were rewarded with a try from Danny Gleeson. With time running out John Barry got a last minute try for Mary’s to secure a bonus point.

Newport moved off the foot of the table with a 19-5 home win over Muskerry. Rory McDonald scored a first half try to give the Tipperary side a 5-0 interval lead. Brian Collins and Phillip O’Brien added tries after the break and Collins converted both. Lorcan Collins replied with a try for the mid Cork side.

With the top two sides in Division Three not playing, Charleville closed the gap with a 48-0 home win over Dunmanway. Peadar Cronin scored two of Charleville’s eight tries. Brian Buckley, Joe Gillis, John O’Neill, Shane Corkery, Kieran O’Connell and Paddy Browne got one each. Corkery and Frankie Holly each kicked two conversions.

Waterford City kept their promotion hopes alive with a 48-7 away win over Bantry Bay. Damian Kennedy and Davy Walsh each scored two tries each and Lenny Power, Aaron Foskin, Darren Walsh and Alex Fitzmaurice got one each with Walsh kicking four conversions. Patrick Murnane scored a try for Bantry and Andre Polivka converted.

Fermoy’s promotion’s hopes received a set a back at home to Douglas when the visitors ran out 12-9 winners. A try by Sean Lehane converted by Barry Hynes gave Douglas a 7-6 interval lead. Joe Lee kicked two penalties for the home side. Lehane extended Douglas’s lead with a try and Lee kicked his third penalty.

Cork Constitution defeated Dolphin 41-17 in the Munster Seconds League South. Shane Kelly, Eoin O’Donnell, Barry Fitzgerald, Andy White and Joe McSwiney were try scorers for the Temple Hill side and Peter O’Sullivan kicked four penalties and two conversions.

Carrigaline defeated Bandon 19-10 in the Junior Two League South. John Tait scored two tries and two conversions for the winners and Stuart Donaldson got a try. Kevin Lucey replied with a try for Bandon and Andrew Willis kicked a conversion and penalty.

A try by Mark Reidy and a conversion and penalty by Ian Jones was not enough for Cobh Pirates who lost at home to Dolphin 39-10.
