Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up.

Clonmel made a winning start to the All Ireland Provincial League campaign, as Highfield, Kilfeacle and Shannon advance in the Munster Junior Cup.

Clonmel scored six tries in their 40-0 victory over the Connacht champions to top the table, but tougher games await them next month away to Dundalk and Instonians.

Tries from Alex Sheehan and Gareth Mulcahy both converted by Conor Cooney gave Clonmel a 14-0 half time lead.

Darragh Foley, Conor Cooney, Dylan Cadogan and Ronan Crosse added tries after the break and Cooney converted three of them.

Leinster champions Dundalk travelled to Belfast and defeated Instonians 15-11 and they will now face Clonmel in their next game in two weeks' time.

There were three ties in the Munster Junior Cup.

Shannon staged a dramatic win at Coonagh with a last minute try from Brian Downey which Ronan McKenna converted earned them a 22-19 victory over St. Senan’s. Senan’s took an early lead with a try from Emile Maffat and a conversion by Declan Rowe. Ronan McKenna and Declan Rowe exchanged penalties to leave the Clare side 10-3 ahead at the break.

Rowe extended Senan’s lead with his second penalty before tries from James Ryan and Kelvin Browne and a McKenna conversion edged Shannon in front 15-13. Rowe added two more penalties before Downey’s late strike booked a semi final place.

Highfield defeated Cobh Pirates 24-13. Highfield raced into an early 12-0 lead with a tries from Jack Duffy and Ritchie Duggan and a Tim Clifford conversion. A penalty by Eoin Geary and a conversion of a try by Mark Chandler left the visitors 12-10 ahead at half time.

A try from Aidan Johnson converted by Clifford extended Highfield’s advantage early in the second half. Eoin Geary kept his side in touch with two penalties but a try from Marc Murphy in the final minute earned Highfield a trip to Young Munster in the quarter finals next week.

Kilfeacle, who trailed 19-5 after thirty five minutes against Clonakilty, staged a great recovery to advance to a semi-final meeting with Shannon after a 36-19 victory. JD O’Mahony scored three tries for Clonakilty in the opening half and Joe Lee kicked two conversions. Kilfeacle replied with tries from Shane Morrissy, Ger Looby, David Lambe, Stephen Quirke, Darren Lowry and Diarmaid O’Donnell and Lowry added three conversions.

In Division 1 of the Munster Junior League, Waterpark defeated Skibbereen 26-5 with tries from John O’Brien, Rory Corbett, Gerry Miller and a penalty try with O’Brien converting three of the tries. Michael Calnan replied with a try for Skibbereen.

Mallow completed their Division 2 program with a 26-21 home win over Waterford City. Waterford led 7-0 at half time with a penalty try which Michael Hayes converted. Mallow responded with tries from Kieran Willis Tim Fitzgerald, Michael Sweeney and Michael O’Flynn, with O’Flynn converting three of the tries. Waterford had second half tries from Simon O’Hara and Alex Fitzmaurice and both were converted by Hayes.

Corca Dhuibhne defeated Cork Constitution 23-6 in the South Munster Junior 2 League play off. Micheal Breathnach scored two tries for the Kerry side and Shane Griffin converted both and also added two penalties and a drop goal. Simon Barry replied with two penalties for the visitors.

The four Leinster sides all advanced in the Under 20 Frazer McMullan Cup. At Temple Hill Cork Constitution lost to UCD 17-15. Con’s scorers were a try from Michael Murphy and a penalty try with Jason Higgins kicking a conversion and a penalty.

Young Munster lost at home to Lansdowne 20-13.
