Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up

Muskerry clinched fourth spot in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League as Bandon were crowned Second Division champions and Cork Constitution claimed the Under 20 title.

Muskerry secured fourth spot in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League as they defeated third placed St. Senan’s 25-7 at Jim Slattery Park.

They finished level with Kilfeacle on points but having lost fewer games they finish ahead of the Tipperary side.

A try from John Herlihy converted by Conor Buckley after three minutes gave Muskerry an early lead. Senan’s drew level with a try from David Dunne and Declan Rowe converted. Aidan Murray restored Muskerry’s advantage with a try on the stroke of half time and Buckley converted for a 14-7 interval lead.

Joe Treacy extended Muskerry’s advantage with a third try early in the second half and Buckley added two penalties.

Kilfeacle ended their campaign with a 44-15 away win over Tralee. David Kiersey, Brian Lowry, Ciaran Lowry, Danny Lambe, Conor Hartigan and Diarmuid Carr were Kilfeacle’s try scorers and James Hogan kicked five penalties and a conversion.

Champions Clonmel, who have been celebrating the three major trophies they have won, showed no ill effects when they travelled to Rathcooney and defeated Old Christians 51-12. Tries from Paudge Keating and David Foley and a conversion and penalty by Conor Cooney gave Clonmel a 15-7 half time lead. Fionn O’Leary replied with a try for the home side and Sean Meaney converted.

Alex Sheehan, Darren Cass, Keating, Stephen Pike, Greg Carroll and Luke Hogan added second half tries and Conor Cooney converted three. Niall McCarthy replied with a try for Old Christians.

Newcastle West, who were assured of the runners up spot, finished their campaign with a 30-13 home win over Galbally. Stephen Kelly scored two tries for the winners and James Kelly, Sean Corbett and Tommy Kelliher scored one each. Sean Herlihy kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Clonakilty caused a surprise at Grove Island, when they defeated St Mary’s 22-15. A penalty from Eoin Deasy and a Declan White try gave Clonakilty an early 8-0 lead. Tries from Robin Gallagher and Sean Lyons and a conversion and penalty by Lyons gave the home side a 15-8 half time lead.

White and Alex O’Mahony added further tries for Clon’ and Deasy converted both.

In Division Two both Bandon and Clanwilliam who were battling it out for the Second Division title, both received walk overs from Killarney and Crosshaven respectively, which meant that Bandon were crowned Second Division Champions.

Thurles defeated Youghal 49-3 and the East Cork side will have to wait another few weeks to know if they will be relegated to Division Three.

Peter Coman, Gerard McCormack and Eoghan O’Dwyer scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Nicky Irwin, John Coman and Phil Kelly got a try each. O’Dwyer kicked two conversions. Killian Daly replied with a penalty for Youghal.

Abbeyfeale defeated Ballincollig 39-5 with three tries from Gavin Dillon and one each by Kieran McCarthy and Ger Walsh. Tom Hassett kicked four conversions and two penalties. Ian O’Malley replied with a try for Ballincollig.

A try from Simon O’Hara gave Waterford City a 5-0 away win at Ennis.

Newport and Presentation played out a 20-20 draw. Ian Healy and Leo Beretta scored tries for Newport and Philip O’Brien converted both and added two penalties. Pres’ were awarded two penalty tries and Shane O’Brien converted both and kicked two penalties.

A last minute penalty from Rob Armstrong gave Cork Constitution a 19-17 win over Sunday’s Well and saw them win the South Munster Junior League title. Joe Upritchard scored a try for Con’ and Armstrong contributed four penalties and a conversion. Peter Arigho scored two tries for the ‘Well and Robert Doyle got one with Mark Lawless adding a conversion.

Cobh Pirates defeated Clonmel 22-15 in the Junior Two Cup South. Glen O’Sullivan, Cian Gormley and Denis Kinevane were try scorers for Cobh and Ian Jones kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Corca Dhuibhne defeated Dolphin 24-22 in Mahon. Ciaran Collins scored two tries for the West Kerry Gaeltacht side and Adam Daly got one. Shane Griffin converted all three tries and also added a penalty.

Cork Constitution lifted the Donal Walsh Under 20 Trophy at Temple Hill with a deserved 27-17 win over Young Munster.

Ben Kilkenny gave the visitors an early lead with a try, but Con’ hit back with two tries from Paddy Hegarty and a Joe White conversion had the home side 12-5 ahead at half time. A third try from Hegarty and one by Liam O’Connell and a conversion and penalty by White extended Con’s advantage.

Munster finished with a flourish with tries from Gary Fitzgerald and Mark Mullally and a David O’Mahony conversion.
