Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up

Charleville and Dungarvan will contest this season’s Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final and a major shock in the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup as Newcastle West’s unbeaten run comes to an end.

Probably with an eye on next week’s All Ireland Junior Cup quarter final tie at home to Dundalk, Newcastle West travelled to Cobh with a weakened side and were surprisingly beaten by Cobh Pirates 28-14.

In a closely fought opening half, a try, conversion and a penalty by Eoin Geary gave the Pirates a 10-7 half time lead. Sean McAuliffe scored a try for the visitors and Dave Foley converted. Tom Rice and Greg Higgins added further tries for Cobh and Geary kicked a conversion and two penalties. McAuliffe replied with a second try for Newcastle West and Foley again converted.

Clonmel were deserving 28-0 away winners at Tralee. Tries on 10 and 35 minutes by Luke Hogan, both converted by Dylan Cadogan, had Clonmel 14-0 ahead at the interval. Darragh Foley added a third try on 65 minutes and Luke Hogan completed his hat trick with a try five minutes from time. Cadogan converted both.

Skibbereen booked their semi final spot with a 21-16 home win over Old Christians. Dave Jennings and Dave Shannon scored tries for Skibbereen and Ger Hurley kicked a conversion and three penalties. Paddy Naughton and Alan O’Connell replied with tries for the visitors, Donogh Murnane added a drop goal and Sean Meaney kicked a penalty.

Kilfeacle had to withstand a second half comeback by St. Senan’s before booking their place in the last four on a 22-18 scoreline. Tries by Dave Kiersey and Danny Lamb and two conversions and a penalty by Darren Lowry had Kilfeacle 17-7 ahead at half time. Pa Ryan scored the Clare side’s try and Ger McNamara added a conversion. Pat Ryan got a third try for Kilfeacle and Senan’s responded with a try from Dave Webb and two penalties from McNamara.

There were no shocks in the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield with Bandon, Clanwilliam and Thurles all recording big wins.

Bandon travelled to Ennis and defeated the home side 47-7. They scored seven tries with Sean Óg Murphy (2), Darragh Coffey, Jack Murphy Gearoid Crowley, Aidan Slattery and Kevin Broderick being their try scorers and Richard Walsh converted six of the tries. Thurles recorded a 59-0 away win over Youghal. John Coman, Eoghan Dwyer, Shane Moloney, Peter Coman, Donnacha Duggan, Adrian Burke, Gerry McCormack and Aidan Dwyer were try scorers for Thurles and Eoghan Dwyer kicked eight conversions and a penalty.

Mallow had a19-13 away win over Waterford City. Conor O’Donovan and Michael Flynn and a Flynn conversion had Mallow 12-6 ahead at half time. Michael Hayes kicked two penalties for the home side. Aidan Twomey scored a try after the break which Flynn converted for Mallow and Waterford replied with a try from Ryan Phillips which Hayes converted.

Charleville had a 25-13 away win at Fermoy to book their place in the final of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. A try from Eoin McMahon and two penalties by Shane Corkery had the visitors 11-3 ahead at half time; Mike Sweeney kicked a penalty for Fermoy. McMahon added two more tries after the break and Corkery converted both. Anthony Coady and Peter Stapleton replied with tries for the home side.

Dungarvan defeated Scariff 17-10. There was no score in the opening half but tries from Matt Rabille and Martin Hourihan and a conversion each from Dave Hickey and Seamus Keating and a Keating penalty earned Dungarvan their place in the decider. Ger Burke scored a try for Scariff, Conor Moloney converted and Conor McNamara added a drop goal.

The semi final line up for the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup is Clonmel v Kilfeacle and Cobh Pirates v Skibbereen. The pairings in the Shield are Bandon v Thurles and Mallow v Clanwilliam. All these ties will be played on the 21st December.
