Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up

There were no major shocks in the opening games in Division 1 and 2 of the Munster Junior League as newcomers Kinsale lost heavily to Clonmel.

Kinsale faced a baptism of fire to life in the top flight going down 51-14 at home to Clonmel.

A penalty by Conor Cooney and a conversion of a try by Luke Hogan saw Clonmel race into a 10-0 lead after fifteen minutes.

A try by Mick Barry converted by Cooney had the Tipperary side 17-0 ahead at half time.

Tries from Trevor Melbourne, Stephen Pike and Greg Carroll and two conversions and a penalty by Cooney had Clonmel 39-0 ahead by the 55th minute.

Pat O’Regan scored a try for Clonakilty ten minutes from time and Sean Kingston converted.

Clonmel had further tries from Cooney and Pike with Cooney converting his own try before O’Regan scored a second try which Kingston converted.

St. Senan’s, who were also promoted last season, lost their opening game away to Galbally 17-12.

Two penalties from Declan Rowe had Senan’s 6-0 ahead after sixteen minutes but Sean Bourke hit back with a try and conversion for Galbally after 31 minutes before Rowe kicked a drop goal three minutes before the break for a 9-7 half time lead.

A penalty from Bourke followed by a try and a conversion put Galbally 17-9 in front after 63 minutes.

A penalty two minutes from time by Rowe earned the visitors a losing bonus point.

Muskerry had a surprise 30-20 win over St. Mary’s at Ballyanly. Lorcan Collins, Liam Donovan and Martin Muldoon were try scorers for Muskerry and Darragh Masterson kicked three tries and three penalties. Matthew Hickey replied with two tries for the Limerick side and Sean Lyons converted both and added two penalties.

Clonakilty easily over came the challenge of Tralee at The Vale with a 30-11 victory. Mike Keohane, JD O’Mahony, Ryan Purcell and Luke O’Shea were Clonakilty try scorers and Joe Lee kicked two conversions and two penalties. Richie Liston was Tralee’s try scorer and Ciaran Crowley kicked two penalties.

A try from Michael O’Donovan and a Ger Hurley penalty were not enough for Skibbereen who lost at home to Newcastle West 20-8. James Kelly and Declan Moloney scored tries for the visitors and Conor Whelan added two conversions and two penalties.

Kilfeacle defeated Cobh Pirates 22-6 with two tries from JJ Cooney and one by Diarmuid O’Donnell with Darren Lowery kicked two conversions and a penalty. Greg Higgins and Eamon Ronan replied with penalties for the Pirates.

Waterpark beat Old Christians 17-12. Gavin Mernagh scored a try for the winners and Kieran Butler kicked four penalties. Sean Meaney replied with four penalties for the Cork side.

Bandon scored ten tries in their 68-7 win over Newport on Friday night last in their opening Division Two encounter. Gearoid O’Leary (2), Mighty Okafor, Tome Ferguson, Tin Crowley, Conor Pullet, Kevin Brophy, Enda Phelan, Oisin Healy and Richard Walsh were Bandon’s try scorers and Walsh kicked nine conversions.

The big game in this Division saw Clanwilliam defeat Mallow 16-3 at the North Cork venue. Vivion Grisewood scored a try for the Tipp’ side and Brian Kissane kicked three penalties and a conversion. Michael Flynn replied with a penalty for Mallow.

Killarney defeated Crosshaven 15-12 with two tries from Padraig Hallissey and one by Brian O’Sullivan. Eamon Ring replied with two tries for the home side and Kenny O’Donovan kicked a conversion.

Castleisland had a 30-3 away win over Youghal with Kieran Downey scoring two tries for the Kerry side and Mike Cronin and Seamie Riordan getting one each. Con Reynolds added two penalties and two conversions.

Ennis edged out Abbeyfeale 23-18 with tries from Alan Brandon, Damien Ford and Enda Galvin. Sean Hayes kicked two conversions and a penalty and Thomás Hassett replied with six penalties for Abbeyfeale.

Thurles defeated Waterford City 20-13 with tries from Peter Cowman and Nicky Irwin. Eoghan O’Dwyer added two conversions and two penalties. Tom Bowe replied with a try for the home side and Darren Walsh kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Presentation overcame Ballincollig 18-6. Eoin Lynch and Brendan Coleman scored tries for the Limerick side. Greg Airey kicked a penalty and a conversion and Mark Phair also added a penalty. Kevin Doyle replied with two penalties for Ballincollig.

Highfield won the Dennehy Cup with a 25-0 win over holders Cork Constitution. Neal Griffin, Darren Walsh and Mark Spillett scored tries for the winners and Dave Eustace added two penalties and two conversions.

Corca Dhuibhne retained the Moss Keane Memorial Cup with a 42-0 win over Listowel in the final. Kevin Moriarty and Ciaran Slattery scored two tries each for the winners and Ciaran Houlihan and Brian Murphy one apiece. Shane Griffin kicked six conversions.
