Weekend Junior Rugby Round Up

Richmond and Mallow took a big step towards winning their respective Divisions in the Munster Junior League with victories over their closest rivals, while Third Division leaders Dungarvan lost for the first time away to Waterford City.

With only three games remaining in the First Division, Richmond took a major step towards winning their third title with an 11-5 away win over second placed Galbally. The visitors led 8-5 at half time with a try by Michael O’Friel and a Jonathon Ford penalty to a try from Jack Hogan. Ford kicked a second penalty after the break to extend Richmond’s lead at the top.

Both Kanturk and Skibbereen who meet next Sunday are now in joint second place. Kanturk travelled to Ballinakill and defeated the home side 24-8. In a closely fought opening half Kanturk led 10-8 at the break with a try from Don McCabe and a conversion and penalty by Darragh Meade to a try by Ivan Kiersey and a penalty from Tom Kiersey. Paul Cotter and Bryan O’Neill scored second half tries both of which Meade converted.

Skibbereen had to pull out all the stops to defeat Kilfeacle 11-3 at the Showgrounds. This result leaves Kilfeacle second last in the table and in great danger of being relegated, although there are eight sides above them not clear of the drop yet. Keith Burke gave Kilfeacle an early lead with a penalty but, Ger Hurley had the sides level at half time with a penalty. A try by Donal Mehigan and a second Hurley penalty secured the points for the home side.

Thurles are still at the bottom ten points behind Kilfeacle and must win their remaining games to avoid the drop. Thurles lost at home to Tralee 36-7. The Kerry side had the bonus point wrapped up by half time as they led 26-7. Nessan Crean scored two tries and Eoin Murphy and Dan O’Connor one apiece. Gareth Walsh kicked one conversion. O’Connor and Ian Murphy added further tries after the break.

Clonmel have slipped down to third last place three points ahead of Kilfeacle, after they lost away to St. Senan’s 13-10. Fergal Lawler gave the Clare side an early lead with a try after a minute. Clonmel’s Conor Cooney and Declan Collins exchanged penalties to leave it 8-3 at half time. A try by Ciaran Burke converted by Danny Lyons put the visitors ahead but a try by Ian Fitzgerald two minutes from time denied Clonmel victory.

Cobh Pirates eased their relegation worries with an 11-5 away win over Crosshaven. A try by Alan Langford gave Cobh a 5-0 interval lead. Brendan Ronan added a penalty and Mark Chandler kicked a drop goal for Cobh in the second half and Crosshaven replied with a try from Ross O’Connell.

Clanwilliam collected maximum points with a 23-22 home win over Old Christians. Christopher Doyle, Paul Ryan, Ian Quinlan and Robert Doyle scored tries for the winners and Doyle kicked a penalty. Conor Quaid replied with a try for the Rathcooney side and Aidan Tobin converted and added five penalties.

Leaders Mallow defeated their closest rivals St. Mary’s in Division Two with a 16-10 home win to extend their lead to four points. Mallow led 10-3 at the break with a try from Neil Lucey which Sean Glynn converted and a penalty from Michael O’Flynn. Sean Lyons replied with a penalty for the Saints. Two second half penalties from Glynn secured the points for Mallow and a last minute try from Sean Barry converted by Lyons earned the Limerick side a losing bonus point.

Kinsale missed a great opportunity to move into second place when they lost away to bottom side Bandon 17-10 in the upset of the day. Chris Hartnett and Jerry Crowley scored tries for Bandon and Cathal Crowley converted both and also kicked a penalty. Ben Alary replied with a try for Kinsale and Paul Perez kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Presentation collected maximum points with a 31-3 home win over Scariff. Steve Lynch scored three tries for the winners and Shane O’Brien and John Higgins one each. Lynch kicked three conversions. James Kelly replied with a penalty for Scariff.

Newcastle West kept their challenge alive with an 8-3 away win over Ennis. Sean Neville scored a try for the winners and Tommy Kelleher kicked a penalty. Dylan Tynan-O’Mahony replied with a penalty for Ennis.

Killarney remain in fourth place after a 21-19 away win over Ballincollig which leaves the Tanner park side bottom of the table. Paul Daly scored two tries for Ballincollig and Glen Murphy one and all three were converted by Kevin Ryan.

Muskerry are also close to the relegation zone following their 11-0 home defeat by Castleisland. Shane O’Connell scored a try for the winners and JJ Casey kicked two penalties.

Youghal defeated Newport 29-15 with tries from Alan Frahill-O’Connor, Jonathon Ormond, Scott O’Sullivan and Colm Mulcahy. Aaron Daly kicked three conversions and a penalty. Philip O’Brien and Tom Morris replied with tries for Newport and Shane Ryan added a conversion and penalty.

Third Division leaders Dungarvan lost for the first time when Waterford City defeated them 17-0 thanks to two penalty tries both of which Darren Walsh converted and he also kicked a penalty.

With second placed Killorglin idle, Charleville lost a great chance of closing the gap when they lost away to Douglas 20-12. Shane Corkery and Damian Leahy scored tries for the north Cork side and Peadar Cronin kicked a conversion.

Carrick-on-Suir kept their promotion challenge on track with a 28-5 home win over Bantry Bay. Ross Clery and William Lonergan scored two tries each for the winners and Peter Steele one. Charlie Boland added a penalty and Pat Murnane replied with a try for the west Cork side.

Abbeyfeale defeated Corca Dhuibhne 28-26. Ger Walsh scored two tires for the winners and Micheal Roche and Michael Enright got one. Roche kicked two conversions and Thomas Enright added a penalty in the final minute to win the game. Ciaran Slattery, Sean Collins, Gary O’Connor and Kevin Moriarty replied with tries for the Kerry Gaeltacht side and Micheal Flannery added three conversions.

Dunmanway and Kilrush shared the spoils after a 10-10 draw. Eamon Freeman scored two tries for Dunmanway and Rory Conway replied with a try for Kilrush, Martin Hehir converted and Alan Horgan kicked a penalty.

Cork Constitution collected maximum points with a 36-19 away win over Thomond in the Under 21 South Western Conference. James O’Sullivan and Cian McGovern scored two tries each for the winners and Dylan Mullen got one. Sean Og Murphy converted four of the tries and also kicked a penalty.

Tries from Darragh O’Keeffe and Paul Stack were not enough for Highfield who lost at home to U.L. Bohemian 24-21. O’Keeffe kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Carrigaline got their second phase of the Junior Two League South off to a great start with a 13-0 home win over Dolphin. Dave Donoghue scored a try for the winners and John Tait kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Cork Constitution defeated U.C.C. 27-12. Ryan Hassan, Tadgh Buckley, Ben Halpin and James O’Sullivan all scored tries for Con’ and Pierre Hadbi kicked a penalty and two conversions. Alex Coyne and Eoin Corcoran replied with tries for the students and Mick Murphy kicked a conversion.

Castleisland defeated Kenmare 10-6 in the George O’Connell Cup. James Dignam scored a try, conversion and penalty for the winners and Albert O’Sullivan-Greene replied with two penalties for Kenmare.

In the Junior Three League South Crosshaven defeated Douglas 10-6. Jack White scored a try for the winners and Brendan Fagan kicked a conversion and penalty. Andrew Larkin replied with two penalties for the Moneygourney side.

Mitchelstown defeated Cork Transport 19-5. Morgan Fox, Kieran Walsh and Eoin Burke scored tries for the North Cork side and Ritchie Barry kicked two conversions.
