Weekend Club Rugby Roundup

A last gasp penalty earned defending Champions Lansdowne a draw at Temple Hill, as UL Bohemian bounced back from last week’s defeat with a win in Belfast in Division 1B.

Cork Constitution looked on the verge of their first win in Division 1A against League champions Lansdowne when Tomas Quinlan kicked his third penalty for a 22-19 lead with three minutes remaining.
Credit to the Dublin side, Tom Daly landed a long range penalty in the final minute for a share of the spoils.
Con’ led 16-3 at half time with tries from Brian Hayes and Luke Cahill. Quinlan kicked three penalties and a drop goal.

In Division 1B UL Bohemian defeated Belfast Harlequins 20-18. Cian Aherne and Kevin O’Byrne scored tries for the winners who led 10-6 at half time. Rick McKenna kicked two conversions and two penalties.

Blackrock College proved too strong for Shannon at Coonagh with a 21-16 victory, thanks to two first half tries by Harry Harbison and Sean Coughlan and another from their second row, Cillian Duff. Jack O'Carroll converted all three.
Shannon had tries by Ronan McKenna and Sean McCarthy with McKenna and Shane Airey kicking penalties in each half to earn a losing bonus point for the Marcus Horan coached Shannon side.

Dolphin who led Ballymena 7-3 at half time with a penalty try. Ballymena hit a purple patch in a ten minute spell mid way through the second half when they scored four tries for a 37-10 victory at Irish Independent Park. Cian McGovern kicked a conversion and penalty for Dolphin.

U.C.C. began their Division 2A campaign with a 21-20 win against Skerries at the Mardyke. Tries from Kevin O’Keeffe and Cillian Ansboro and three penalties and a conversion by O’Keeffe had the students 21-6 ahead with ten minutes remaining and had to withstand a late rally from the Dublin side.

Thomond travelled to Belfast and were defeated by Queens University 17-3.

In Division 2C the four Munster sides all recorded victories.
Old Crescent defeated Navan 20-10 with tries from S Gleeson, C O’Reilly and Brendan Guilfoyle. Larry Hanly kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Bruff had their second win of the campaign with a 22-15 home win against Tullamore. Brendan Deady scored a try for Bruff and Tony Cahill kicked five penalties and a conversion.

Midleton brushed aside league newcomers Dundalk 43-0 at the Towns Park.

Kanturk made the long journey to Sligo and won 45-15. Sean Cremin and Ronan O’Brien scored two tries each and Luke McCabe got one. They were also awarded a penalty try.

On the local scene Charleville defeated Douglas-Carrigaline 15-5 in the O’Neill Cup. Ger Sheehan and Luke McCormack scored tries for Charleville and Damian Leahy kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Holders Highfield are through to the Dennehy Cup Final with a 37-7 win at home to Cobh Pirates. Mick Dillane (2), Joe Dwyer-Canton and Donal Moriarty were try scorers for Highfield. They were also awarded a penalty try and Dave Eustace kicked three conversions and two penalties.
