Weekend Club Round-Up

Cork Constitution and Highfield will contest the Cork Charity Cup final as Bandon and Kilfeacle booked their place in the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup decider.

Highfield are through to the Cork Charity Cup final after their 24-7 win over Dolphin at Mahon. Tries from Dave Kelly and Fintan O’Sullivan and a Paddy O’Toole conversion gave Highfield a 12-7 half time lead. Cian McGovern scored a try and a conversion for Dolphin. Kelly and John McLoughlin added further tries in the second half with O’Toole converting one.

In a thrilling Junior Clubs Challenge Shield semi-final at Bandon, the home side and Newcastle West played out a 20-20 draw after extra time, but Bandon advanced as a result of scoring two tries to one. Sean Corbett opened the scoring with a try for Newcastle West but Bandon hit back with a Kerry Desmond try converted by Sean Óg Murphy. The visitors led 8-7 at half time with a penalty from Sean Herlihy. Herlihy extended Newcastle West’s advantage with a penalty but a Christian Mulcahy try converted by Murphy put Bandon ahead 14-11. A penalty from Herlihy sent the game into extra time. A fourth penalty from Herlihy and a Stephen Kelly drop goal put Newcastle West 20-14 ahead but two late Murphy penalties tied up the scores 20-20 and Bandon advanced on the try rule count.

In the other semi-final, Kilfeacle travelled to Skibbereen and defeated the home side 14-3. All the scores came in the opening half. Ciaran Lowry and Tom Doyle scored tries for the Tipperary side, both of which Shane Looby converted. Denis McCarthy replied with a penalty for the west Cork side.

Moynihan scored his second try to make it 17-0 three minutes into the second half. Seven minutes from time Keith McCarthy got in for a Youghal try which he converted, but the ‘Well hit back with a try from Cathal Kidney to make it 27-7. Late tries from McCarthy and Pat O’Shea both of which McCarthy converted left six points in it as the home side held out for victory and a home tie with Midleton in round 4.
