Weekend Club Round-Up

Bruff booked their place in the quarter final of the Munster Senior Cup as Newcastle West are the only Munster side to win in the All Ireland Junior Cup.

After a poor start to the season Bruff have made it two wins from two after their 34-15 home win over Midleton to book a trip to holders Cork Constitution in the quarter finals of the Munster Senior Cup.

Bruff raced into an early 17-0 lead with a try from Darragh Mulcahy and two by Declan Bannon who also kicked a conversion. Michael Cronin got a try for Midleton just before half time.

Bannon extended Bruff’s advantage with a try which he also converted before tries from Jay Cruikshank and Luke Morrissey had Bruff 24-15 ahead at the end of the third quarter.

Bannon scored his fourth try and Mark Cosgrove also crossed the white wash as Bruff ran out comfortable winners.

Making their first appearance in the All Ireland Junior Cup, Newcastle West booked their quarter final place with a 64-17 home win over Our Lady’s Boys club Galway. They scored ten tries with James and Stephen Kelly getting three each. John Sheehan, Michael Culhane, Sean Herlihy and Gary O’Donnell also scored a try each. Herlihy converted seven of the tries.

A try in the eleventh minute of injury time by Curtis Stewart and converted by Mike Weir earned Ulster side Bangor a surprising 21-15 away win over Clonmel.

The sides were scoreless at half time but a try from Alex Sheehan and a conversion and penalty by Conor Cooney put the home side 10-0 in front. Bangor hit back with tries from Stewart and Mark Widdowson with Weir converting both. Neville Melbourne put Clonmel back in front with a try ten minutes from time until Bangor’s late winner decided the outcome.

Connemara just got the better of St. Mary’s 29-27 in a thrilling cup tie at the Monastery Field. A try from Eoghan Bourke and a conversion and two penalties by Shane Sweeney gave the Connacht side an early 13-0 lead. Mary’s hit back with tries from Danny Hickey and Ger McInerney and a conversion and penalty by Sean Lyons to lead 15-13 at half time.

Sweeney kicked a penalty to put the home side back in front before Devlin Price scored Mary’s third try and Lyons converted.

A second try from Bourke and two penalties and a conversion by Sweeney had Connemara ahead 29-22 when in the final minute Dave O’Leary scored a try for Mary’s but Lyons failed with the conversion to send the game into extra time.

A weakened Cobh Pirates side were no match for Leinster Junior League leaders Dundalk who ran out 51-8 home winners. Greg Higgins kicked a penalty in the opening half for the Pirates who trailed 13-3 at the interval and Tom Rice also got a try.
