Weekend Club Preview

The finals of the Munster Junior Clubs’ Challenge Cup and Shield are down for decision, together with the second round of games in the Munster Junior Cup and the opening round of the Munster Junior Plate.

There is also only one game in the Ulster Bank League involving a Munster Club which sees UCC taking on leaders Old Wesley who are unbeaten in Division 2A at Donnybrook. This is a tough ask for the Cork students, who are in danger of being relegated to Division 2B next season and would desperately need to get something from this tie.

Munster Junior League leaders Clonmel and Cobh Pirates go head to head in the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup decider at the Showgrounds in Fermoy. The East Cork side, who are hovering above the relegation zone, face a tricky task as they aim to build on their recent Munster Junior Cup victory over Cork Constitution and claim silverware from a disappointing season. These sides are due to meet in the league at the Tipperary venue the following week.

Bandon, who won promotion from the Second Division of the Munster Junior League last week, lock horns with Mallow at Tanner Park in the final of the Munster Junior Clubs Shield. The West Cork side will be expected to claim their first piece of silverware as they recorded a 48-0 win over Mallow in the League at Old Chapel.

Last year’s Munster Junior Cup finalists Clanwilliam are away to Garryowen, who won the trophy two years ago.

Two sides from Division 3 of the Junior League who recorded shock wins the opening round face tricky away assignments as Carrigaline, who defeated Dolphin, are away to Kanturk. Fethard, who marked their debut with an away win over Ennis, are on the road again as they travel to South Cork to take on Kinsale.

Young Munster entertain County Limerick neighbours Newcastle West at Tom Clifford Park in what could be the game of the day.

Three other Limerick City sides have home ties as St Mary’s take on Killarney at Grove Island, Thomond are at home to Cashel and Presentation welcome Midleton to Rathuard.

Highfield travel to Suirside to take on Waterpark at Ballinakill.

The Junior Plate gets underway with four Cork derbies as Dolphin lock horns with Sunday’s Well, Cork Constitution are at home to UCC in a game that will now be played at Temple Hill on Monday night.

Youghal welcome Fermoy to East Cork and Douglas take on Charleville at the South Cork venue and the home side recorded an 18-13 home win over the North Cork side when they met at the same venue in Division 3 of the Junior League in October.

There is a Tipperary derby between Newport and Thurles in North Tipperary and the home side will be aiming to avenge December’s 31-10 away defeat in Division 2 of the Junior League.

In other ties Ennis are at home to Galbally, UL Bohemian entertain Abbeyfeale, Muskerry take on Dungarvan at Ballyanly, Old Crescent travel to the Kingdom to meet Killorglin and Bruff are away to Nenagh Ormond in an all senior club clash.
