Holders Newcastle West were knocked out of the Transfield Cup as the Junior Rugby season gets under way.

Old Crescent’s great start to the season continued when their Second XV defeated Newcastle West 30-25 in the Transfield Cup.

Richmond were the only junior side to win defeating Bruff 27-0 with two tries from Jonathan Tully and one each from Keelan Stephenson and Ross O’Neill. Wayne Murphy kicked two conversions and a penalty.

In the other ties Thomond defeated St. Mary’s 21-5 and U.L. Bohemian were 21-0 home winners over Shannon.

Crosshaven defeated Ballincollig in the opening game in the O’Neill Cup 15-7.

The opening games in the Dennehy Cup saw wins for Clonakilty, Cobh Pirates, Cork Constitution and holders Highfield who defeated Dolphin 31-10 with three trys from Bobby Cussen and one by Barry O’Hea. Dave Eustace converted all four trys and also added a penalty.

Crosshaven and Kinsale played a 19-19 draw after extra time with Kinsale advancing on the try count 3 to 2.
