Rugby Returns To Markets Field

Today, Munster Rugby and Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP) entered into an agreement to bring rugby back to one of the most famous sporting venues in Ireland.

Sport has been located at the Markets Field, Limerick since the 1880's and has staged many National and International occasions. Rugby was last played in the ground in the 1950's and then was home to League of Ireland Soccer and Greyhound Racing.

Negotiations have been ongoing for some time and with the assistance of Sporting Limerick an agreement was reached this morning between Munster Rugby and LEDP confirming that rugby matches will be played at the venue in the near future.

Present at the contract signing were Munster Rugby representatives Senior Vice President Gerry O'Shea, Hon. Treasurer Tom Kinirons and Chairman of Domestic Rugby Ger Malone. Also present were Gerry Boland, Liam McElligott and George Lee from LEDP.

Speaking on behalf of Munster Rugby, Senior Vice President Gerry O'Shea said "Its great to have rugby back in the Markets Field after a break of almost sixty years. We appreciate the support of Sporting Limerick, JP McManus and LEDP in reaching an agreement with Munster Rugby to play rugby once again at this historic venue."
