Rugby Legends To Kick Off Charity Drive

Former rugby stars Jason Holland, John Kelly and Ken O’Connell, will lead a team of rugby legends made up of former international and interprovincial players in a Charity Legends match at the Crosshaven RFC Golden Oldies Festival at Myrtleville Cross, Crosshaven on Saturday 19th May.

Preceding the legends match, sports stars from across the codes will take part in a novel sporting challenge. Each star will have to drop a goal, take a soccer penalty, a football free kick and finally, a long puc.

The winner will receive the day’s gate receipts for their chosen charity. Among the stars taking part will be former Cork City captain, Greg O’Halloran, who has nominated Temple Street Childrens Hospital and GAA legend, Niall Cahalane, who has chosen DEBRA Ireland.

Golden Oldies Rugby is open to players of 35 years and older and will be played under the internationally recognised ‘Golden Oldies Rules’. The adapted rules allow for players to choose how much contact they engage in. For example players wearing red shorts may be tackled but not taken to the ground, while players wearing green shorts may not be tackled at all!

“We have had a great response from clubs around Munster and we hope to have in the region of ten teams. The idea is to open the sport back up to those who may no longer be of an age where they play regularly. It is a fun festival and the Golden Oldies Rules allow guys to choose the level they participate at” said festival organiser, Peter O’Donovan.

The festival kicks off at 13:00 on Saturday, May, 19th, with the charity sports challenge commencing at 15:00 followed by the legends match at 17:00. Admission for adults is €;5 with children free. All gate proceeds on the day will go to charity.
