Paul O’Connell Launches Referee Recruitment Campaign

Ireland Rugby Captain, Paul O’Connell was recently on hand to launch the new Munster Association of Referees (M.A.R.) recruitment campaign at the Sports Arena in University of Limerick.

This season M.A.R. have designed a new website created to help both new and current referees to reach their full potential as they set out to encourage men and women to take up the role of rugby refereeing.

The new website is now more inter-active with plenty of resources and in particular some novelty quizzes to help keep the mind sharp with law issues on the game. It is expected to hold on-line competitions for rugby supporters in the future. M.A.R. members will also have access to discussion forums on aspects of law and will be able to deliberate and review decisions made in recent matches.

At the launch Paul O’Connell discussed how referees have influenced rugby over his playing career from age grade right through to professional rugby.

He spoke about rugby referees being both mentors and coaches as he moved through the underage ranks and fondly remembered how underage referees such as Noel “Wiry” Sexton helped the young players understand the need for discipline.

Today, referees are Paul's “go to guys” for interpretation on the technical aspects of the game and he recognised how the challenges of their role, emphasising that referees must always be respected.

He concluded that Munster and Irish rugby needs referees to survive and strongly encouraged those interested to take up the role and give something back to the game.

Paul was welcomed to the launch by current Munster Association of Referees (MAR) president, Mr Eugene Meaney. Also in attendance were 2015 rugby world cup Referee, John Lacey and ex Irish international player and current Referee, Joy Neville.

The next Referees course will take place in Mallow on the 13th of Sept which is being facilitated by IRFU Referee Development Manager and International Referee, Peter Fitzgibbon.
