Munster Senior Challenge Cup Draw

Munster Senior Challenge Cup Draw

The draw for the Munster Senior Challenge Cup took place yesterday, 19th August at the Charleville Park Hotel – the draw was made by Mick Goggin, President of Munster Rugby.

The Munster Senior Challenge Cup is an integral part of Munster’s domestic rugby season with the opening round scheduled to be played in September 2014.

Speaking at the launch Mick Goggin said “I am delighted to have the honour of launching this year’s Munster Senior Cup competition. This is our oldest and most prestigious provincial competition and was first contested 128 years ago.

"This year Cork Constitution will be trying to win the trophy for the third consecutive season, a feat they last achieved in 1907. While in more recent times the club emphasis has switched to the All Ireland Leagues the Senior Cup remains a coveted prize in our province. This was borne out by the dramatic finals of the past two years both of which saw Constitution win deep into injury time against UL Bohemians and Garryowen. Con then went on to win the Bateman Cup and will no doubt be determined to defend their titles.

“The competition continues to make history and this year our newest Senior club, Kanturk RFC, make their debut. I wish them well in the competition and also in their inaugural Ulster Bank All Ireland League campaign. This is a competition which has served Munster Rugby very well over a long number of years and I would like to wish all clubs every success in their efforts to win the trophy.”

Seventeen sides entered the draw and the six sides playing in Division 1A & 1B of the Ulster Bank League got a bye into Round Two.

There will be one game in Round 1.
