Munster Schools Update

Schools PRO Maurcie Hartery reflects on last weeks competitive action across the province.

The Senior (U19) and Junior (U16) Cup’s got underway with Villiers taking on CBS Sexton Street in qualifiers in both competitions in Coonagh.

The Junior match was the first to take place on Monday with Villiers running out easy 53 – 5 winners. We have not received a result of the meeting between the two sides in the Senior competition.

The Bowen Shield (U18) continued on this week with two matches taking place. Ard Scoil hosted Castletroy College, with Castletroy continuing their unbeaten start with a 36 – 12 victory. Their points came from five tries, 4 conversions and a penalty. In Cork, CBC and PBC tussled in Lansdowne with CBC proving too strong in a 24 – 3 victory to also extend their unbeaten record in the competition.

In the “B” section of the Bowen Shield, the competition reached the knockout stages, with two quarter finals down to take place to see who would join the two automatic qualifiers in the semi finals. Unfortunately, neither quarter final took place as High School CBS gave Ardscoil na Mara a walkover in one quarter final and CBC gave Colaiste Iosaef a walkover in the second quarter final. That means these two schools join Colaiste Phobail Bheanntrai and Villiers in the semi final stage of this competition.

The McCarthy Cup (U15) is entering the latter stages of the competition, with four games taking place this week again. C.B.C. put last week’s close defeat to arch rivals PBC behind them with a comfortable 57 – 7 win over Glenstal Abbey in Lansdowne. Bandon made the long trip to Limerick worthwhile with a 17 – 15 win in Corbally. PBC continued their 100% record in this competition with a hard fought 15 – 7 victory over a valiant Castletroy College side in Wilton. In Tipperary, Rockwell continued their push for a top four finish with a 24 – 6 victory over Ard Scoil Rís.

In the "B" section, there were only two games this week, PBC completed the double over Castletroy College with a comfortable 70 – 0 victory. Rockwell also completed a double at McCarthy Cup level, winning the “B” match, in a very similar score to the “A” match, 26 – 5 against Ard Scoil Ris.

The McCarthy Cup C Section reached the knockout stages with the Quarter Finals taking place. In Bruff, Colaiste Chiarain had a superb 34 – 24 victory over Cork powerhouses PBC to book their semi final place. High School CBS also reached the last four after receiving a walkover from Sexton St CBS. We have not received results from the other two quarter finals.

In Limerick, the Senior City Cup, Ard Scoil Ris hosted Castletroy College for the right to play Glenstal in the decider in two weeks time. Castletroy escaped Coonagh with a 20 – 13 victory and ensured a rematch of the Round 1 game versus Glenstal. Glenstal recorded a victory in that league match on a scoreline of 23 – 16, so all signs point to a very close game in two weeks time.

In friendlies at Senior level Rockwell completed a double over their Tipperary counterparts by defeating Roscrea 5 – 0 in the “A” match and 35 – 17 in the “B” match. In the other friendlies we received a result for at this level, Glenstal Abbey defeated Bandon 30 points to 21. At Junior level, there were victories for Bandon (18 – 12) and Rockwell (35 – 17) over Glenstal and PBC respectively, while Castletroy were defeated 31 – 5 by Newbridge.

In U14 fixtures, St. Munchins and PBC played 3 games in Corbally on Wednesday. St. Munchins came out victorious in two games and PBC in one. St. Munchins won the “A” game and the “B” game on score lines of 17 – 7 and 31 – 26 respectively. PBC took the “C” game, winning 38 – 27. Castletroy College travelled to Roscrea for two games at the same age group, where they won one game and lost the other. Roscrea prevailed in the “A” game 24 – 19 but Castletroy won the “B” game 29 – 27 to share the spoils. Rockwell played host to Kilkenny College for 2 matches, and prevailed in both. They won the “A” game 19 – 5, while in the “B” match the winning margin was 15, as they won 28 – 13.

Next week the mid-term break means that school’s action is much more curtailed, so the next update will be in two weeks time.
