Mid Week Schools Rugby Update

The final series of league games in both the Bowen Shield and McCarthy Cup have been completed and the big shock was Presentation College’s failure to qualify for the McCarthy Cup knockout stages for the first time.

Glenstal Abbey booked the final qualifying place in the McCarthy Cup with a 19-8 home win over PBC. This result is a big boost for the County Limerick School following on a great run in the Avonmore Schools Junior Cup last season and their victory in the final of the Schools Senior City Cup a few weeks ago against Rockwell.
The Cork side led 3-0 at half time with a penalty from Harry Shanahan. However Glenstal responded with three second half tries from Dave Quanne, Theo Broderick and Tim Costigan. Jack Stafford kicked two conversions. Conor O’Flynn replied with a try for the visitors.

C.B.C. made sure of their place in the quarter finals with a 36-0 win over St. Munchin’s at Lansdowne. Ben O’Callaghan and Daire Feeney scored two tries each for the Cork side and Gordon Goode and Robert Hyde got a try each. Alex McHenry kicked three conversions.

Rockwell defeated Bandon Grammar 26-3 to book their place in the quarter finals. Conor Cashman. Ben Mullan, Lee Molloy and Charlie Stevens scored tries for the Tipperary side and Bill Johnstone kicked three penalties.

Ard Scoil Ris finished top of the table with a 17-12 away win over Castletroy College. Jack O’Donnell scored three tries for the winners and Peadar Collins kicked a penalty. Castletroy replied with tries from Darragh O’Neill and Sean McBrearty. Conor Fleming added a conversion.

The line up for the quarter finals of the Mccarthy Cup is
Quarter Finals:
Rockwell v Glenstal Abbey, C.B.C. v Castletroy College;
Semi Finals: Ard Scoil Ris v Rockwell/Glenstal Abbey, Crescent Comprehensive v C.B.C./Castletroy College.

Crescent Comprehensive finished top of the Bowen Shield and PBC booked the other semi final spot with a 49-9 away win over Glenstal Abbey. The winners scored seven tries. Ben Murphy got two tries and Michael Murphy, Jerry Roche, Eoin Perry, Conor Flanagan and Rob Reardon one apiece. Flanagan kicked four conversions and a penalty and Luke Merriman added a penalty.

Both Rockwell and C.B.C. will have home quarter final ties after their victories. Rockwell easily saw of the challenge of Bandon Grammar on a 36-0 score line. Stephen McMahon scored two tries for Rockwell and Oisin Leahy, Lukas Kaminski, Cormac Looby and Aidan Moynihan got a try each. Moynihan kicked three conversions.

CBC defeated St. Munchin’s 24-11 to move ahead of the Limerick school in the table and thus setup a repeat quarter final with the same opposition at the same venue. Thomas Quinlan scored two tries and two conversions for the Cork side. Glenn Stokes and James O’Flynn scored a try each and Mikey Fleming kicked a conversion and penalty. David Begley scored a try for Munchin’s and Luke Kennedy kicked two penalties.

Ard Scoil Ris also reached the knock out stages with a 16-15 away win over Castletroy College. Paul Obande and Oscar Lyons scored tries for the winners and Stephen Fitzgerald kicked two penalties.
