Junior Rugby Roundup

A bad day for the two Junior clubs in the Munster Junior Cup as both Cork Constitution and Garryowen advanced to the final.

Garryowen edged out Richmond in a thrilling Munster Junior Cup semi final tie at Richmond Park, thus denying Richmond the chance of emulating both Midleton, Clonakilty and Cashel who did the League and Cup double as well as winning a place in the All Ireland League in the same season.

Andrew O’Byrne gave Garryowen the lead with a penalty after five minutes when a Richmond player was yellow carded. A try from James Kelly on the half hour mark put Richmond 5-3 ahead at the interval.
Eamon Connolly and Conor Hartigan restored Garryowen’s advantage with tries and O’Byrne added a conversion to put the Light Blues 15-5 in front.
A try from Michael Kelleher converted by Brian Mullins closed the gap to three points and Mullins was off target with three penalty attempts in the dying minutes to level the game, the last from in front of the posts.

At Temple Hill Cork Constitution were too strong for Skibbereen running out 25-3 winners. The home side took an early lead with a penalty from Brian Derham but David Shannon had Skibbereen level with a drop goal on thirty minutes. Tries either side of half time by Seamus Glynn and Michael Keyes put the game beyond the West Cork side. Eoin O’Donnell then scored a superb individual try and Derham converted and also added a penalty

The final will be at a Limerick venue next weekend.

Clonmel won the Mansergh Cup defeating Nenagh Ormond 20-12 in the final at Clanwilliam Park. Conor Cooney gave Clonmel a 10-0 half time lead with a try, conversion and a penalty. David Lonergan increased his side’s advantage with a try but Nenagh hit back with tries from Jack O’Donovan and Dean Wallace and a conversion from Aidan O’Dwyer. Conor Cooney made sure of victory for Clonmel with an injury time try.

Carrigaline did the Junior Two South League and Cup double with a narrow 10-9 win over Cork Constitution in the final of the Cup at Musgrave Park winning the trophy for the first time. A break from the half way line by Sean Lucey opened the scoring with a try for Carrigaline. Simon Barry hit back with two penalties for the Temple Hill side to lead 6-5 at the interval. Barry extended Constitution’s lead with a third penalty.
The loss of Peter Kelleher with a serious hand injury was a blow to Carrigaline but the introduction of Roy Murphy, Ciaran O’Shea and Ken Wilkins gave Carrigaline a better platform. After sustained pressure Tony O’Keeffe went over in the corner for Carrigaline in what was the final score of the game.

There were victories for both Kinsale and Muskerry in the other finals on the back pitch at Musgrave Park.

Kinsale defeated Mallow 13-8 to lift the Paul Twomey Cup. Aidan Clarke scored a try for Kinsale and Sean Kingston kicked a conversion and two penalties. Timmy Fitzgerald replied with a try for Mallow and Aidan Twomey kicked a drop goal.

Muskerry defeated Fermoy 52-10 in the final of the McCarthy Cup. Jason Fallon and Rob O’Keeffe scored three tries each for the winners and Pat Dennehy and Mick Scannell got a try each. O’Keeffe converted six of the tries. Mark Cotton replied with a try for Fermoy and Dylan Lacey kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Waterpark will play Cashel in the final of the Dave Dineen Cup after their 48-15 away win over holders Dolphin. Ben Cunningham scored two tries for the winners and Jerry Miller, David Fitzgerald, Paul Molloy, Ben Cross and Yuta Kiyotani got one each. Geoff Deegan added five conversions and a penalty.
