Junior Rugby Roundup

With just five games remaining in the First Division of the Munster Junior League, Clonmel took a big step towards retaining their title after two of their main challengers lost vital ground.

Bottom side St. Mary’s put a big dent in Richmond’s title ambitions, when a last minute converted try saw the Limerick derby finish all square 14-14 under lights at Richmond Park on Saturday night.
The Saints took the lead with a try by David Byrne after thirty minutes which Sean Lyons converted for a 7-0 half time lead.

Richmond were ahead 14-7 by the end of the third quarter with tries from Gearoid Phelan and Pat Humphries. Brian Mullins converted both.

In the final play of the game Niall Crooks scored a try for Mary’s and Lyons converted.

Leaders Clonmel travelled to Clanwilliam and defeated the home side 23-13.
Clonmel after a few poor performances in recent weeks made several changes for this encounter, dropping some of the players that have been the back bone to their recent great run.
Dylan Cadogan opened their account with a penalty after five minutes. But Clan’ hit back with a try from Andrew Ryan which Niall Leahy converted.

Darren Cass restored Clonmel’s advantage with a try and Cadogan converted and substitute Conor Cooney extended their lead with a penalty, before Leahy kept Clan’ in touch with a penalty to leave it 13-10 at half time.
Captain Ronan Crosse who also came off the bench scored a try for Clonmel and Cooney converted.
Leahy and Cooney exchanged penalties but Leahy missed a penalty that would have earned Clanwilliam a losing bonus point in the final minutes.

Clonmel now hold a five point lead over second placed Bandon ahead of next week’s top of the table clash with Richmond.

Kilfeacle were held at home by St. Senan’s 6-6. The sides were level 3-3 at half time Shane Looby kicking a penalty for the home side and John Mulready replying for Senan’s.
Looby kicked a second penalty for Kilfeacle and Declan Rowe replied for the Clare side.

Waterpark eased their relegation worries with a 33-11 bonus point win over fellow strugglers Muskerry at Ballinakill. The home side were 21-6 ahead at half time and had tries from John Flynn, Bill Connor, Scot Hornibrook, Kevin Phelan and Eoin O’Connor. Geoff Deegan kicked three conversions. Rob O’Mahony was Muskerry’s try scorer and Eoin Keohane added two penalties.

Only one game was played in the Second Division which saw Mallow defeat Charleville 19-12 with tries from Ed Healy, Tim Fitzgerald and Leo Regan. Jimmy Glynn kicked two conversions. Paddy Browne and Mick Mullins replied with tries for Charleville and Shane O’Sullivan converted one.

The Ballincollig v Dungarvan tie was postponed because of a water logged pitch.

Fermoy caused a big shock in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup semi final when they defeated a fancied Crosshaven side with a penalty from Mikey Sweeney five minutes from time for a 13-10 victory.
A try and conversion from Michael Lynch put Crosshaven ahead but Fermoy were level before half time with a try from Eddie O’Connell which Sweeney converted.

Sweeney and Ian Smith exchanged penalties before Sweeney won it with his second penalty.
Fermoy will now face Youghal in the final.
