Junior Rugby Roundup

14th February 2016 By Munster Rugby

Bandon are now just a point behind leaders Clonmel following their 17-10 home win over Kilfeacle.
Playing with the elements in the opening half Kilfeacle led 10-9 at half time with a Cormac Ryan try and a conversion and a penalty from Gavin Heuston. Bandon controlled the second half and four penalties from Richard Walsh and a Gerry Crowley try saw Bandon take the spoils.

The two sides occupying the relegation places Clonakilty and St. Mary’s both lost.

After their great draw against Richmond last week, bottom side St. Mary’s were defeated 18-11 by Muskerry at Grove Island. The Saints led 11-3 at half time with a try from Eoghan O’Byrne and two penalties by Sean Lyons. Liam O’Donovan and Con Buckley scored tries for Muskerry in a five minute spell mid way through the second half and Eoin Keohane kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Clonakilty still remain in relegation trouble after their 29-17 away defeat at Clanwilliam. A last minute converted try denied the visitors a losing bonus point. Graham Roche scored two tries for the winners and Andrew Ryan, Kieran O’Donnell and Darragh Crowe were their other try scorers. Niall Leahy and Ryan each kicked a conversion. Ethan Jennings and Mark Purcell were Clon’s try scorers and Purcell kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Skibbereen came from 15-5 down at half time to claim a 22-18 bonus point victory away to Newcastle West. Dean O’Brien and John Sheehan scored tries for the home side and Sean Herlihy kicked a conversion and two penalties. Cian Keegan, Denis McCarthy, Gavin Coombes and Kieran Shannon were Skibb’s try scorers and McCarthy kicked a conversion.

Second Division leaders Abbeyfeale extended their lead at the top of the table with a 17-6 away win at Charleville. A Liam O’Connor try and a conversion and penalty from Steve Daly had the visitors 10-0 ahead after four minutes. Two penalties from Shane O’Sullivan looked like earning Charleville a losing bonus point but a try from Micheal Enright in the last minute converted by Daly denied them anything from the game.

The shock of the day was in Kinsale where second placed Kinsale were surprisingly beaten 10-9 by Waterford City. Ben Duggan and Alex Fitzgibbon scored tries for the visitors and Sean Kingston kicked three penalties for Kinsale.

Cobh Pirates ran in seven tries in their 45-5 win over Newport to move back into second place. This game was transferred to the UL Arena 4G pitch because the Tipperary pitch was flooded. Aaron O’Flynn, Kevin Allen, Richard O’Sullivan, Lee McCarthy, Shane Cullimore, Alan Langford and Eoin McSweeney all scored tries for the Pirates. Langford kicked a penalty and Eamon Ronan added a penalty and two conversions. Kevin O’Brien was Newport’s try scorer.

With Third Division leader’s Youghal’s game at Fethard postponed, Crosshaven maintained their challenge for promotion with a 39-0 win over Bantry Bay. George Jagoe and Sa’id Koya scored two tries each for Crosshaven and Eamon Ring, Ian Smith and Luke O’Mahony also scored tries. Smith and Michael Lynch each kicked a conversion.

Fermoy maintained their challenge with a 49-0 home win against Scariff. Fermoy led 25-0 at half time with tries from Michael Sweeney, Tom Murphy, Eddie O’Connell and Rob Fuller. Sweeney kicked a penalty and a conversion. Murphy, O’Connell, Dylan Lacey and Conor Ahern added further tries in the second half and Sweeney kicked two conversions.

Killorglin kept their promotion hopes alive with a 17-10 away win over Carrick-on-Suir. Tony Lynch, Noel O’Reilly and James Hayes scored tries for Killorglin and Luke O’Shea added a conversion. James Rooney was Carrick’s try scorer and Mick Dineen kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Killarney defeated Douglas-Carrigaline 24-10. Ger Moynihan, Brian Lynch, Paul Moynihan and Shane Sweeney scored tries for the Kerry side and Paudie Sheehan kicked two conversions. John Kidney replied with a try for the visitors and Eoin Harris kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Cork Constitution defeated Highfield 20-18 to book their place in the final of the Munster Seconds League against Shannon. It was 12-8 to Con’ at half time with tries from Arthur Spring and Cian Barry and a Jamie Murphy conversion. John McLoughlin scored a try for Highfield and John Sheehan added a penalty.
Con’ extended their advantage with a try from Spring and a penalty from Murphy. Highfield rallied with a try from David Norris and a Sheehan conversion and penalty, but the Highfield kicker was off target with a last minute penalty to win the game.

Waterpark defeated Cashel 17-8 in their Mick Barry Cup tie at Ballinakill. Chris Hickey, Alex Hackett and Vincent Molloy scored tries for Waterpark and Hickey kicked one conversion.

Iveragh continued their recent good run in the George O’Connell Cup with a 10-5 home win over Shandon. Kevin O’Shea and Emmet Curran scored tries for the Kerry side.
