Junior Rugby Roundup

31st January 2011 By Munster Rugby

There were plenty of shocks in the twelve games that did go ahead in the Munster Junior Cup.

Holders U.L. Bohemian who were seeking their third successive title went out in dramatic circumstances at Fitzgerald Park, when Thomond ended their ambitions with a 16-15 victory.

The holders led 12-6 at half time with tries from Sean Reynolds and Gary Walsh and a conversion by Stuart Flanagan. Dermot Fitzgerald replied with two penalties for the home side. Flanagan added another penalty for the visitors and Diarmuid Waters kicked a drop goal to keep Thomond in touch. In the final play of the game wing forward Michael O’Donnell burst through several would be tackles and managed to touch down under the posts and Fitzgerald converted to send his side into the fifth round.

St. Mary’s snatched a last minute try to defeat Old Christians 19-16 at Rathcooney. The Limerick side led 14-6 at the break with a try, drop goal and two penalties from Sean Lyons to two Aidan Tobin penalties. Christians rallied after the break and took the lead with a try from Brian Rall and a conversion and penalty by Tobin. Glen Callaghan sent the visitors into the next round with a try in the final minute.

St. Mary’s reward in the fifth round is a trip to Cashel after the Tipperary side defeated Crosshaven 37-16. Cian O’Connor and Ollie McGlinchey each scored two tries for the winners. Daragh O’Brien kicked four conversions and three penalties.

In an exciting tie at the Mardyke U.C.C. defeated Clonmel 23-16. Kevin Kidney and Brian Lonergan exchanged early penalties before Neville O’Donoghue scored a try for College which Kidney converted for a 13-9 lead. On the stroke of half time Kevin Harney got in for a Clonmel try which Lonergan converted to lead by three points at the break.
Kidney levelled with a penalty on 65 minutes. With extra time looming Mike Owens got in for a try for the students and Kidney converted to earn his side a home tie against Young Munster in the next round.

Young Munster had the biggest win of the day when they defeated Ballincollig 65-0 at Clifford Park. The winners scored nine tries. Craig O’Hanlon got three and Evan Culhane, Declan Bannon, James Jackman, Conor O’Brian and Ian Cross one each and they were also awarded a penalty try. Waterpark proved too strong for St. Senan’s at Ballinakill running out 27-10 winners. In a closely fought opening half the home side led 12-10. Barry Murphy put the visitors ahead with a try but Donal Kavanagh equalised minutes later. Ger McNamara ran the length of the pitch to restore Senan’s lead with a second try but Shane Kavanagh brought Waterpark level and Jared Dunbar converted to leave two points between the sides at the break.
It was all Waterpark in the second half with Shane Kavanagh and Alistair McCormack adding tries and Dunbar kicked a conversion and penalty.

Youghal defeated Abbeyfeale 34-15 and setup a mouth watering clash at home to Cork Constitution in the next round. Alan Fox, Brendan Mackey, Alan Moloney, Thomas Curran and Ian White all scored tries for the East Cork side and Keith McCarthy kicked three conversions and a penalty. Daniel Murray and Cathal O’Reilly scored tries for Abbeyfeale and Andrew Scannell kicked a penalty and conversion.

Padraig Hallissey and Brian O’Sullivan replied with tries for the Kerry side and Paudie Sheehan kicked a conversion and penalty.

It was double celebration for Dungarvan as they defeated Kilrush 31-13 but also picked up maximum points as this game also doubled up as a league tie. David Hickey scored two tries for the winners and Joey Lawlor and Cian Moloney one each. Conor Foley converted all four and also added a penalty.

Elsewhere Galbally received a walk over from Carrick-on-Suir and the Newcastle West v Dolphin and Douglas v Scariff ties were postponed due to frozen pitches.

Presentation have extended their advantage at the top of Division Three of the Munster Junior League after their 28-19 away win over Fermoy.
