Junior Rugby Round Up

Clonmel, Cork Constitution, Garryowen and Skibbereen all booked their place in the semi finals of the Munster Junior Cup with convincing victories.

Garryowen knocked out holders Cashel 29-14 at the Spafield. Shane O’Brien was the Limerick side’s star converting tries from Brendan Cullinane and Mike O’Shea and also kicking five penalties. Michael Kelly replied with a try for Cashel and Rory O’Connor kicked three penalties.

Cork Constitution ended Kilfeacle’s Cup hopes with a 40-8 win at Temple Hill. The sides were level 8-8 at the interval. Sean Murphy scored a try and a penalty for the home side and Josh Featherstone replied with a try for the visitors and Gavin Ryan kicked a penalty. Four unanswered second half tries from Shane Kelly, Eoin O’Donnell, Alan Ross and Conor Desmond proved decisive plus three conversions and two penalties from Murphy.

Clonmel kept Tipperary’s hopes alive in the competition with a 16-13 home win over Thomond thanks to player coach Ben Martin who scored all his side’s points. Greg Airey put Thomond ahead with a penalty after two minutes but a try and conversion by Martin midway through the half had Clonmel in front. A penalty from Martin made it 10-3 in Clonmel’s favour at the break. Martin and Airey exchanged penalties before Martin brought his tally to sixteen with his third penalty. Dermot Ryan scored a try for Thomond in injury time and Airey converted.

Three converted tries in the final eight minutes ended Old Christians cup hopes after Skibbereen defeated the home side 45-17 at Rathcooney. The visitors led 18-10 at half time with David Shannon scoring a try, conversion and penalty, Peter Stout a try and Denis McCarthy a penalty. The home side replied with a try from Shane Barry and a conversion and a penalty by Conor Mangan. Shannon kicked two further penalties for the winners and converted late tries from John O’Sullivan, Ivan Jennings and Brendan O’Donovan. Tom Maher scored a second half try for Old Christians and Mangan converted.

The semi final line up on 25th March will see Garryowen play Cork Constitution at Dooradoyle and Skibbereen will have home advantage against Clonmel.

Muskerry booked a semi final meeting away to Dungarvan in the Munster Junior Plate after a 7-3 home win over Nenagh Ormond. All the scores came in the opening half. John Chambers scored a try for Muskerry and Pat Dennehy converted. Michael Walsh replied with a penalty for the Tipperary side.

Abbeyfeale are waiting the winners of the other quarter final tie between Old Crescent and Presentation in the other semi final. Presentation booked their quarter final place with a 31-18 victory over Newport at Rathuard.

Killorglin will face Fermoy in the final of the Munster Junior Bowl after their 10-8 win over Corca Dhuibhne at Ballydavid. A magnificent try by Noel O’Reilly which Luke O’Shea converted from the touch line and an O’Shea penalty had Killorglin 10-5 ahead at half time. The West Gaeltacht side's only reply after the break was a penalty.

Newcastle West kept their promotion hopes alive in Division Two of the Munster Junior League with a 25-7 away win over Scariff. Newcastle West led 17-0 at half time with tries from Stephen Kelly and John Sheehan and two conversions and a penalty from Alan Roche. Kelly scored a third try for the visitors which Roche converted and the Clare side replied with a try by Henry Purcell and Thomas Cronin converted.

Holders Richmond are through to the final of the Transfield Cup after a 24-18 home win over Bruff. A try, conversion and penalty from Darragh Clancy and a Jonathon Ford try had Richmond 15-10 ahead at the interval. Mike Carroll scored a try for Bruff and Brian Carroll kicked a conversion and penalty. Clancy kicked three penalties for Richmond in the second half and Finbarr Hogan and Mike O’Friel added tries for the winners. Mark Cosgrove replied with a try for Bruff and Brian Carroll converted and also kicked a penalty.

Holders Midleton are through to semi finals of the Cork County Cup after a 16-5 home win over Mallow. The east Cork side led 9-5 at half time with three penalties from Paul Daly to a try by Leonard Browne. Robert Colan-O’Leary added a try after the break which Daly converted.

Kinsale booked their place in the last four with a 52-17 home win over Youghal. The winners ran in eight tries. Frazer Hogdson scored three, Jeremy Coughlan two and Ben Alary, Peter Murphy and David Kingston one apiece. Renaud Sergere kicked six conversions. Alan Fox replied with two tries for Youghal and Aaron Daly converted both and also added a penalty.

Kanturk are through to the semi finals of the O’Neill Cup after their 40-0 home win over Charleville. Jack Berkley, Peter Berkley and Luke McCabe each scored two tries for the Duhallow side and Gary Piggott got one. Peter Earley kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Ballincollig caused a major shock in the Junior Two South Cup with a 9-6 home win over league champions Dolphin. Denis Galvin kicked a penalty and two drop goals for the winners and Mark Long replied with two penalties for the Musgrave Park outfit.

Shandon advanced to the last eight with a 28-7 away win over Listowel. Adrian Cronin, Rory Flaherty, Sean Twomey and Mick Reilly scored tries and Barry Leahy converted all four.

Waterpark defeated Bandon 29-3 at Ballinakill. Shane Barry Conor Molloy and Mick McCarthy each scored two tries for the winners and Jeff Deegan kicked three conversions and a penalty.

A try and two penalties by Conor Whelan helped Newcastle West to an 11-3 away win over St. Senan’s in the O’Carroll Plate.

The final series of league games in the Under 21 South Western Conference were played over the weekend. Five penalties from Darragh O’Keeffe helped Highfield to a 15-13 home win over Galwegians.

Old Crescent defeated Shannon 12-9 to top their section and will play Garryowen in the final next weekend.

The play offs next week to see which two sides will qualify for the Frazer McMullen Cup the week after, will have U.L. Bohemian at home to Shannon and Dolphin will entertain Cork Constitution.
