Junior Rugby Round Up

Skibbereen and Killorglin maintained their top spot in their respective Divisions of the Munster Junior League as Mallow went clear at the top of the Second Division.

Skibbereen needed a last minute try from David Shannon to snatch a dramatic 15-12 home win over Waterpark in their top of the table clash in Division One.
John Flynn gave Waterpark a 9-5 half time lead. Declan Coppinger replied with a try for the home side. Flynn extended the visitors advantage with his fourth penalty but Shannon struck with two second half tries to secure victory.

Richmond moved into second place a point behind the leaders with a 46-0 home win over bottom side Thurles. The home side were 17-0 ahead at half time with tries from Barry McNamara and Thomas O’Brien. Jonathon Forde kicked both conversions and a penalty. James Hayes, Thomas O’Brien, Stephen Clancy, Garret O’Hanlon and Gearoid Phelan scored second half tries and Forde converted two of the tries.

Galbally still remain unbeaten but had to come from 9-3 down at half time to defeat St. Senan’s 20-9. Declan Collins kicked three penalties for Senan’s in the opening half and Darren Guerin replied with a penalty for Galbally. Guerin added four more penalties after the break and Tony Hennebry scored a try for the home side.

Kanturk were pushed all the way by Cobh Pirates before coming out on top 17-12 to keep in touch with the leaders. Tries from Carlton O’Leary and Paul Cotter and two conversions and a penalty by Darragh Meade gave Kanturk a 17-5 interval lead. John Barry-Murphy scored a try for Cobh. Jack Hickey got a try in the second half for the visitors which Mark Chandler converted.

Clonmel’s home game with Old Christians was abandoned mid way through the second half due to the referee having to retire with Clonmel leading 21-9. All the scores came in the opening half. Frances Quinlan, Robbie Carroll and Greg Carroll scored tries for Clonmel and Ben Martin converted all three. Conor Mangan replied with three penalties for the Rathcooney side.

Kilfeacle and Tralee shared the spoils. Darren Lowry scored a try for the Tipperary side and Mark Butler kicked a conversion and three penalties. Dan O’Connor and Garret Walsh replied with tries for the Kerry side and Walsh kicked two penalties.

Crosshaven recorded their first win of the campaign with a 32-8 away win over Clanwilliam. Jake Grey, Darren Keane, Don Geary and Ross O’Connell scored tries for the winners and Fergus Campion kicked three conversions, drop goal and a penalty. John Redican replied with a try for the home side and Brian Kissane kicked a penalty.

Mallow have gone clear in Division Two when they collected maximum points at home to Ballincollig with a 34-14 victory. The visitors led 14-8 at half time with two tries from Glen Murphy which Kevin Ryan converted, Graham Kelly replied with a try for Mallow and Michael Flynn kicked a penalty. Player Coach Robbie Doyle added two tries after the break for Mallow and Sam Holt and Richard Weedle got one each. O’Flynn converted three of the tries.

Presentation maintained their challenge with a 16-7 home win over Muskerry. Brendan Coleman scored a try for the winners. Mark Phair kicked a conversion and two penalties and Sean O’Brien also added a penalty. Darren Farrell replied with a try for Muskerry and Eoin Keohane converted.

With six minutes remaining St. Mary’s led Newcastle West 13-0 in a top of the table clash. Sean Lyons scored a try and conversion for the Saints and Darren Clancy kicked two drop goals, but two late tries by James Kelly both converted by Alan Roche secured victory for the visitors and ended the home side’s unbeaten run.

Youghal moved into third place with a maximum point win over Bandon on a 29-19 scoreline. Alan Maloney scored two tries for the winners and Stephen Kelly and Niall Clohessy got one each. Aaron Daly kicked three conversions and a penalty. Eoin Sugrue and Mike Murphy scored tries for the home side and Sean O’Riordan kicked three penalties.

Killarney won the Kerry derby with a 17-11 home win over Castleisland. Mike Nash scored a try for Killarney who were also awarded a penalty try. Paudie Sheahan converted both and also added a penalty. Eugene Cronin replied with a try for Castleisland and JJ Casey kicked two penalties.

Four penalties from Bryan Murphy helped Ennis to a 12-10 away win over Kinsale. Frazer Hodgson scored a try and penalty for the home side and Peter Murphy added a conversion.

Scariff won their first game with a 27-22 home win over Newport. Robbie Madden scored three tries for the winners and Michael Madden and James Kelly got one each with Kelly adding a conversion.

Killorglin remain top of the Third Division after their 45-3 home win over Dunmanway. Andrew O’Reilly scored two tries for the Kerry side and Barry Sheehan, Darren Curtayne, Mark Healy, Dave Sullivan and Tony Lynch got one each. Dave Coffey kicked two conversions and two penalties. Daniel McSweeney replied with a penalty for the visitors.

Dungarvan defeated Corca Dhuibhne 52-6 to maintain their unbeaten record. David O’Riordan and Michael Irwin scored two tries each for the winners and David Hickey, Cian Walsh, Kieran Morrissey and Conor Foley got one apiece. Foley kicked four conversions and Hickey two. Kevin Moriarty replied with two penalties for the visitors.

Carrick-on-Suir defeated Douglas 28-25 in a seven try thriller at the Tipperary venue. Brian Slattery, David Kiersey, Willie Lonergan and Ross Clery got a try each for Carrick’ and Charlie Boland kicked four conversions. Darren McEniry, Adam Walsh and Darren Twomey replied with tries for Douglas and Joe Larkin kicked two conversions and two penalties.

Abbeyfeale defeated Bantry Bay 32-3. Michael Enright scored two tries and Liam Herlihy and Ger Walsh got one apiece for the winners. Tom Enright kicked three conversions and two penalties. Brian Keohane kicked a penalty for the home side.

Fermoy won the bottom of the table clash with a 46-10 home win over Kilrush. William Keane scored two tries and Eddie O’Connell, Paddy O’Donoghue, Anthony Coady and Peter Stapleton got one each. O’Connell kicked five conversions and two penalties. Paul Conway replied with a try, conversion and a penalty for the Clare side.

Cork Constitution maintained their unbeaten run in the Southern section of the Munster Seconds League with a 34-14 victory away to Cashel. Peter O’Sullivan scored two tries and two conversions for the Temple Hill side. Shane Kelly got two tries and Cathal Quinn and Simon Hanbidge got one each. Cashel replied with a try from Paddy Maher and three penalties by Colin Morrissey.

Midleton defeated Dolphin 10-8 with a try from Conor O’Keeffe and a conversion and penalty by Kieran Burns.

Dolphin defeated Ballincollig 9-7 in the Junior Two League South with Martin Ahern kicking three penalties.

Sunday’s Well defeated Cork Transport in a top of the table clash 17-13 in their section of the Junior Three League South. Donal heron scored a try for the winners and Kenny Barry added four penalties.

Mitchelstown continued their good run with a 29-3 win over Fermoy. Ritchie Barry scored two tries for teh winners and also kicked three conversions and a penalty. Paul Horgan and Paidai Dennehy got a try each.
