Junior Rugby Round-Up

There was disappointment for the two Munster clubs in the All Ireland Junior Cup quarter-finals at the weekend.

Both Bandon and Galbally lost away to Leinster opposition.

Bandon travelled to Ashbourne and lost 33-8. A try from Jack Murphy and a Kerry Desmond penalty saw the West Cork side trail 14-8 at half time.

DLSP, who defeated Clonmel comprehensively in the opening round, had to battle hard for their 39-22 home win over Galbally. Tony Henebry, Jack O’Mullane, Tommy Childs and Oisin Walsh scored tries for Galbally and O’Mullane kicked a conversion.

Charleville defeated Ballincollig 32-15 in their Junior Clubs Challenge Shield first round tie. Jack Doyle, Gavin Kelleher and Mattie O’Neill scored tries for Charleville. They were also awarded a penalty try. Michael O’Flynn kicked three conversions and two penalties. Taljaard Hardus and Shane Kavanagh replied with tries for Ballincollig and Charlie Boland added a conversion and a penalty. Charleville will now host Crosshaven in the fourth quarter-final tie next week.

Kinsale booked their semi-final place with a 13-6 victory at home to Waterford City. Fergus Gimlet scored a try for Kinsale and Timmy Broderick kicked a conversion and two penalties. Michael Hayes replied with two penalties for the visitors.

Thurles were 43-12 home winners against Castleisland. Mark Cummins, Eoghan O’Dwyer, Tommy Stevens, Paddy Phelan, Dave Kelly and Aidan O’Dwyer scored tries for Thurles. Aidan O’Dwyer kicked five conversions and a penalty. Kieran Downey and Mike Cronin replied with tries for Castleisland and Dan O’Shea kicked a conversion.

Waterpark defeated Presentation 33-15 at Rathuard. James Kiersey scored two tries for the winners and Conor Horan, Paddy Kiersey and Alex Molloy got a try each. John O’Brien kicked four conversions.
Derek Byrnes and Conor McMahon scored tries for Presentation and Craig Airey added a conversion and a penalty.

Killarney caused the upset of the day in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup when they travelled to Fermoy and defeated the home side 25-15. Killarney led 15-3 at half-time with tries from Colin McCarthy and Paul O’Sullivan. Paudie Sheehan kicked a conversion and a penalty. Eddie O’Connell replied with a penalty for Fermoy. Aaron Jones scored a third try for Killarney and Paudie Sheehan converted and also added a penalty.
Fermoy replied with tries from Peter Murphy and Tom Murphy and a conversion by O’Connell.

Killorglin defeated Douglas-Carrigaline 25-16 to book their place in the last four. Cathal Doyle scored two tries for the winners and Liam Foley got one. Luke O’Shea kicked two conversions and two penalties. Davy Donoghue replied with a try for the visitors and Eoin Harris kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Highfield defeated Sunday’s Well 17-13 with a last minute try in the Donal Walsh U20 League. Eoin Keating and Rob McGuire scored tries for Highfield and Ted O’Leary converted both and added a penalty. Mickey Collins replied with a try for the ‘Well and Cormac Kelleher kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Cork Constitution defeated Shannon 26-16 with tries from Sean Grey, Rob Walsh and Eoin Lacey, with Lacey kicking a conversion three penalties.

Dolphin defeated UCC Freshers 21-17. Dalton O’Shaughnessy and Eugene Redmond scored tries for Dolphin and Jimmy Ahern kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Highfield maintained their lead in their section of the Junior 2 League South with a 27-7 away win against Muskerry. Ben Glavin scored two tries for the Woodleigh Park outfit and Colm Connolly, Maurice Power and Eoin Quinn got one each. Dave Eustace kicked one conversion.

Dolphin defeated Cork Constitution 20-5 to maintain their challenge. Nigel Murphy, Ian Kennell Webb and Eolann Tracey scored tries and Tracey added a conversion and a penalty.

Mallow were 16-13 away winners against Iveragh with tries from Garvan O’Brien and Mike Sweeney. Kieran Willis kicked two penalties.
