Junior Rugby Round-Up

It was a historic day for the two Munster Clubs making their debut in the Ulster Bank All Ireland Junior Cup as both won and the two more experienced sides lost at home.

Bandon made the long journey to Shaws Bridge and defeated a fancied Instonians side 30-26, even though they had to withstand a late rally by the Ulster side which yielded two late tries to close the gap to four points.

Bandon dominated the opening half and were awarded a penalty try as well as tries from Ryan Hayes, Alex Morrissey and Tim Cummins. Olan Crowley added one conversion.

Instonians came more into the game in the second half but a try from Philip Murphy kept Bandon in the lead and Crowley added a penalty as some superb defending by the west Cork side saw them book their place in the quarter finals.

Galbally travelled to Gorey who were also making their debut and the Co. Limerick side came out on top 16-13 in a thrilling encounter. Michael Donovan was Galbally’s try scorer and Jack O’Mullane kicked a conversion and three penalties.

DLSP travelled to Clonmel and easily disposed of the Munster Junior League leaders 45-5. The visitors led 12-0 at half-time. Avon Leis and Keith Kite each scored two tries and Ian O’Connor, Ian Massey and Matty Tuhuks got a try each with Michael Neville kicking four conversions. Brendan Lawlor was Clonmel’s try scorer.

Richmond also lost at home to Ballyclare, 29-16. Kealon Stephenson scored a try for Richmond and Brian Mullins kicked a conversion and three penalties. Dave Clark, John Kinstry, Michael Kirk and James Geer scored tries for the Ulster side and Robbie Reed kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Ties to be played Saturday 12th November.

There was only one game played in the Munster Junior League and that resulted in a surprising 28-12 away win for Presentation away to Crosshaven in Division 2. This result ended Crosshaven’s unbeaten start.

Despite falling behind to a penalty from Craig Airey after eight minutes, Crosshaven dominated the first quarter and opened their account when Michael Lynch found a gap following a ruck on the Pres’ 22 to score under the posts and Ian Smith converted.

Such was the power of the Crosshaven back line; it looked like it was going to be a big win for the home side.
An experienced Presentation pack where Leonard Slattery and James Ryan excelled saw the visitors gain control and were worthy winners at the finish.

Tries by Sean O’Connell and Conor McMahon and two penalties and a conversion from Airey gave Presentation a 21-7 half time lead.

Nine minutes into the second half Eoin Lynch scored a third try for Pres’ and Airey converted, but for all their dominance the Limerick side failed to score a fourth try to secure a bonus point.

In the last play of the game Michael Lynch scored his second try in the corner for Crosshaven.
