Junior Rugby Round-Up

There were plenty of shocks in the opening round of the Munster Junior Cup with several Senior Second sides making their exit.

The biggest upset was at Moneygourney where Carrigaline, who are bottom of Division Three of the Munster Junior League and without a win all season, defeated Dolphin 17-14. Ray Donoghue scored two tries for Carrigaline and Kieran Kelleher got one. Brendan Barrett kicked one conversion. Ken O’Halloran and Rob Hyde replied with tries for Dolphin and Conor Flannigan converted both.

Fethard making their debut in the competition defeated Ennis 18-10 with tries from Sam Morton and Shane Kavanagh. Richard Carroll kicked a conversion and two penalties. Damien Forde replied with a try for Ennis and Conor Dolan kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Cobh Pirates defeated Cork Constitution 21-18 at the Paddocks. The Temple Hill side raced into an 18-7 lead at half time with tries from Kerry Desmond, Chris McAuliffe and Dave Fitzgerald as Jason Higgins added a penalty. Tom Rice and Tom Keavney scored tries for Cobh, who were also awarded a penalty try. Greg Higgins converted all three tries.

Bandon defeated U.C.C. 36-19 at the Mardyke. Bandon had tries from Sean Óg Murphy, Richard Walsh, Des Prendergast, Jack Murphy and Gearoid O’Leary. Walsh kicked four conversions and a penalty. Eoin O’Carroll replied with two tries for the students and Dan Healy got one, with Kevin O’Keeffe converting two of the tries.

St. Senan’s defeated U.L. Bohemian 26-16 at Annacotty with tries from Declan Rowe, Pa Ryan, Tom Cronin and a penalty try. Rowe added three conversions. Joe Moloney replied with a try for Bohs and Robbie Bourke converted and also kicked three penalties.

A try from Denis McCarthy gave Skibbereen a 5-0 interval lead away to Waterford City, but it was the Second Division side who hit back with tries from Ryan Phillips and Simon O’Hara with Michael Hayes converting both for a 14-5 victory.

Tries from Barry Gibbons and Darren Ryan and two conversions and two penalties by David O’Mahony earned Young Munster a 20-12 away win over Galbally.

Garryowen defeated Bruff 35-7 at Kilballyowen Park. Jamie Glynn scored three tries for the winners and Mark Griffin got one. Fionn McGibney kicked three penalties and two conversions and Niall Fitzgerald also converted one. Kevin Madigan replied with a try for Bruff and Eoin Cahill converted.

Mallow won the north Cork derby with a 15-5 home win over Charleville. Dan McCarthy, Kieran Willis and John Forrest scored tries for Mallow and Eoin McMahon replied with a try for Charleville which Peadar Cronin converted.

Kilfeacle won the Tipperary derby defeating Thurles 46-22. Maurice Morrissy and David Kiersey each scored two tries for the winners and JJ Cooney, Keith Bourke and Cormac O’Donovan got one each. Darren Lowry kicked four conversions and a penalty. Colin Feeley and Colm Skeehan replied with tries for Thurles and Aidan Dwyer added two penalties and two conversions.

Newcastle West got back to winning ways with a 39-21 home win over Nenagh Ormond. The Limerick side raced into an early 19-0 lead with tries from Sean Neville, Sean Herlihy and Stephen Kelly, with Herlihy converting two of them. Nenagh hit back with two tries from Jamie Quigley both converted by Denis Slattery. Newcastle West had further tries from Kelly (2) and Herlihy with the latter adding a conversion and a penalty. Darragh Walsh had a third try for the Tipperary side which Slattery converted.

Kanturk’s Second XV playing in the competition for the first time defeated Youghal 37-3 at Knocknacolan. Ronan O’Brien scored two tries for the winners and Tadgh McSweeney, Bernie Daly and Denis O’Sullivan got one each with skipper Stephen McAuliffe kicking three conversions and two penalties. Keith McCarthy replied with a penalty for Youghal.

After a poor league run, Kinsale defeated Douglas 46-24. Sean Kingston and Richard Kingston each scored two tries for Kinsale and Dan O’Brien, Dave Cowhig, Ashley Black and Peter Craft got one apiece. Barry McGorey kicked three conversions. Dan Cafferkey and Eoin Philpott were try scorers for Douglas with Philpott adding a conversion, drop goal and three penalties.

Killarney had a home 32-5 win against Richmond with tries from Alan Mulligan, Ambrose O’Donovan, Chris Myers, Colin McCarthy, Paul O’Sullivan and Conor O’Leary. O’Sullivan converted one of the tries. Ross O’Neill was Richmond’s try scorer.

St. Mary’s overcame the challenge of Old Crescent at Grove Island 30-17. Greg Barry and Jamie Lynch scored first half tries for Mary’s and Sean Lyons converted one for a 12-0 half time lead. Sean Markham and Darragh Kelly scored further tries for the Saints, with Lyons converting one and adding two penalties. Val McDermott, Sean McCarthy and Kevin Doyle were try scorers for Crescent with McDermott kicking one conversion.

Waterpark defeated Muskerry 23-14. Scott Hornibrook and Adam Walsh scored tries for Waterpark and John Lillis kicked two conversions and three penalties. John Chambers and Pat Rourke replied with tries for Muskerry with Rourke converting both.

Cashel travelled to Castleisland and came away 23-8 winners. Andrew Wallace and Paddy Maher scored tries for the Tipperary side and Ollie McGlinchey converted both and added three penalties. Padraig O’Shea was Castleisland’s try scorer and Danny O’Shea kicked a penalty.

Highfield defeated Sundays Well 43-5 with Tim Clifford scoring three tries and four conversions of Highfield’s tally. Gavin O’Leary, Wayne Falvey, Mark Dorgan and Michael O’Donnell Fitzgerald also got tries. Ian O’Regan replied with a try for the ‘Well.

Thomond advanced to the second round with a 28-18 home win over Abbeyfeale. Cian Hinchey scored a try for Thomond and Dean Cronin kicked seven penalties and a conversion. Brian Collins and Stephen Daly replied with tries for Abbeyfeale and Tomas Hassett kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Clonakilty scored nine tries in their 61-3 home win over Dungarvan. Aidan Foley (3), Eric Kingston, Declan White, Olan Deane, Courtney Canning, Ger McCarthy and Stephen Cotter were their try scorers. Shane Deasy converted eight of the tries.

Shannon were the top scorers when they overcame the challenge of Killorglin 69-13 at Coonagh. Ronan Hunt (3), Ronan McKenna (2), Tim Tobin (2), James Ryan, Liam Cronin and Craig McCallum were Shannon’s try scorers. McKenna kicked eight conversions and a penalty. Killorglin were awarded a penalty try and Seamus Doyle converted and added two penalties.
