Junior Rugby Round-Up

There were no shocks in the second round of the Munster Junior Cup as Clonmel and Bandon win the Munster Junior Clubs Cup and Shield finals.

If it was a bad day for Senior Clubs in Round 1 of the Munster Junior Cup, it was a better day in Round 2 with only one senior side making their exit to a junior club side.

Last season’s beaten finalists Clanwilliam were beaten 13-8 by Garryowen at Dooradoyle in a tightly contested game. Fionn McGibney kicked Garryowen into an early lead with a penalty, but Clan’ hit back with a try from John Richardson. McGibney and Niall Leahy exchanged penalties to leave Clanwilliam 8-6 ahead at half time.

In a nail biting second half, a try from Alex Griffin converted by McGibney saw the Light Blues advance to Round Three and a home tie with Kilfeacle.

Newcastle West’s hopes of a good Cup run came to an end at Clifford Park when they went down to Young Munster 24-13. A try by James Kelly converted by Sean Herlihy gave Newcastle West a 7-5 interval lead. David O’Mahony scored the 'Cookies' try.

A try from Kolio Hifo converted by Hifo put the home side in front but two Herlihy penalties gave Newcastle West a 13-12 lead, but Young Munster finished the stronger and a penalty try and one by Michael Vaughan and a Hifo conversion saw the home side book their place in the next round.

Highfield looked like they were cruising into the third round when they led Waterpark 22-3 at half time with tries from Niall O’Brien, Mark Cunningham, Dave O’Sullivan and two conversions and a penalty by Tim Clifford to a penalty by John Lillis. Clifford added a forth try for Highfield in the second half, but tries from David Pierce, Richard Halley and Lillis all converted by Lillis nearly saw Waterpark cause an upset.

In the all senior club clash at Liam Fitzgerald Park, Cashel got the better of Thomond 13-9. A Dean Cronin penalty gave Thomond a 3-0 half time lead. Brian Silke drew Cashel level and then he converted a try by Andrew Wallace to put the 2011 Cup winners ahead 10-3. Cronin closed the gap to a point with two penalties but another Silke penalty saw Cashel advance.

Presentation proved too strong for Midleton at Rathuard running out 23-6 winners. Shane O’Brien, Alan Daly and Dave Clancy scored tries for Pres’ and O’Brien kicked two penalties and a conversion.

St. Mary’s were the biggest winners of the day defeating Killarney 44-5 at Grove Island. Paul Loughran scored two tries for the Saints and John McNamara, Matthew Hickey, Sean Markham, Sean Lyons, Robin Gallagher and Devlin Price got one each. Lyons kicked two conversions and Brian O’Sullivan replied with a try for the Kerry side.

A Pat O’Regan try proved the difference as Kinsale overcame a strong Fethard challenge 5-0 at Snugmore and set up a mouth watering local derby with Clonakilty in the next round.

The draw for the Third Round is:-
Clonmel/Bandon v Presentation,
Kinsale v Clonakilty
Cobh Pirates v Highfield
Cashel v St. Mary’s
Shannon v Mallow/Old Christians,
Waterford City v Young Munster
Kanturk v St. Senan’s,
Garryowen v Kilfeacle,

Ties to be played on 8th March.

Clonmel won the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup for the first time with a 28-15 win over Cobh Pirates at Fermoy. A try from Ronan Crosse and a conversion and a penalty by Conor Cooney gave the Tipperary side an early 10-0 lead. Eoin Geary opened Cobh’s account with a try which Greg Higgins converted but a Cooney penalty made it 13-7 in favour of the Tipperary side at half time.

Higgins and Cooney exchanged further penalties, but in the final ten minutes, tries from Luke Hogan and Alex Sheehan and a Cooney conversion made sure of victory for Clonmel. Conor Farrell did score a try for Cobh in the final minute.

Bandon maintained their unbeaten run this season when they defeated Mallow 20-5 to win the Munster Junior Clubs Shield final. The winners led 17-0 at half time with tries from Sean Óg Murphy and Conor Pullan and two conversions and a penalty by Richard Walsh.
