Junior Club Rugby Roundup

It was a mixed for the three Munster clubs involved in the opening round of the All Ireland Junior Cup with St. Senan’s being the only side to advance.

St Senan’s travelled to Galway and defeated Monivea 34-3 with tries from Warren Kelly, Fergal Lawlor, Aidan McMahon and Malachy Gavin were try scorers for the Clare side and they were also awarded a penalty try. Declan Rowe kicked two conversions.

Muskerry making their debut in this competition travelled to Sydney Parade and lost to Monkstown 41-16.
This was an evenly contested tie with Monkstown taking their chances that came their way and Muskerry despite long periods of domination were unable to penetrate the home side’s defence. Liam O’Donovan was Muskerry’s try scorer and Eoin Keohane converted and also added three penalties.

For the second year running Newcastle West lost at home in the opening round when they went down to Instonians 20-5. The Belfast side led 6-0 at half time with two penalties from Frazer Wright. Tries from Lewis McNamara and Matt Dawson, both converted by Wright extended Instonians lead, before Stephen Kelly scored a consolation try the home side with fourteen minutes left.

In the only game in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League, St Mary’s defeated Old Christians 20-19 with a last minute try to record their first win of the campaign.
Sean Meaney opened the scoring with a penalty for Old Christians but an instant response from the Saints saw Jamie Sullivan score a try and Sean Lyons converted. Meaney kicked a second penalty for the home side before Lyons got in for a try for Mary’s.
A third Meany penalty left it 15-9 for the visitors at half time. Tries from David O’Driscoll and Geoff Hodder had Old Christians 19-15 ahead ten minutes into the second half but a maul in the final minute of the game saw Brian Purcell touch down for a try to give the visitors the points.

Cobh Pirates are level with Abbeyfeale at the top of the Second Division after their 35-13 home win over Waterford City. Kevin Allen scored two tries for the Pirates and Jack Hickey and Shane Cullimore got one each. Alan Langford kicked three conversions and two penalties. Eamon Ronan also kicked a penalty before retiring injured. Joe Delahunty and Simon O’Hara scored tries for Waterford and Michael Hayes kicked a penalty.

Presentation defeated Dungarvan 56-20 at Rathuard to move into third place, a point behind the leaders. Gerard Clancy scored two tries and Gareth Airey, Damien Carmelo, Shane O’Brien, Conor McMahon, Jeff Gallegan and Craig Airey got one each. Craig Airey kicked five conversions and two penalties. Jack McGrath and Daniel Slevin replied with tries for Dungarvan and David Hickey converted both and also added two penalties.

Kinsale ended Ballincollig’s unbeaten run with a 17-7 away win. Richard and Sean Kingston scored tries for Kinsale and Sean Kingston converted both and also added a penalty. Kevin Doyle replied with a try and a conversion for the home side.

Tralee defeated Charleville 25-20 with tries from Conor O’Nuallain, Nessan Crean and Jamie Byrne. Ben O’Neill kicked two conversions and two penalties. Damian Leahy and Eoin McMahon replied with tries for the home side and Shane O’Sullivan converted both and Leahy kicked two penalties.

Castleisland defeated Killorglin 27-7 in the McElligott Cup semi final. Pat O’Connor scored two tries for the winners who were also awarded a penalty try. Connie Reynolds and Gearoid Lyons each kicked a conversion and a penalty and O’Connor also added a conversion. Brian Hayes replied with a try for Killorglin and Luke O’Shea converted.
