Junior Club Roundup

21st February 2016 By Munster Rugby

Progress was made in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup with all scheduled games going ahead including the last two games in the Second Round and six games in Round Three.

There were big wins for both Old Christians and Skibbereen over Waterford opposition in the two remaining Second Round games.

Old Christians travelled to Dungarvan and defeated the Second Division side 59-14. Old Christians had tries from John Purcell (2), Alan O’Connell, Aidan Weir, Niall McCarthy, Sean Meaney, Ryan O’Connell and Scott Vickery. Meaney kicked seven conversions and a penalty. Dan Slevin and David Hickey replied with tries for Dungarvan and Hickey converted both.

Skibbereen ran in five tries in their 44-0 home win over Waterford City and avenged last season’s defeat by the same opposition. Two penalties from Denis McCarthy had Skibbereen 6-0 ahead at half time. Two tries from Richie Burns and Gavin Coombes, Kieran Shannon and Mattie Walsh also scored tries for Skibb. McCarthy converted all five tries and added a third penalty to bring his tally for the day to nineteen.

In the Third Round Old Christians will host Cork Constitution and Skibbereen will be away to Bandon in what should be two mouth watering clashes.

Galbally continued their recent good run with an injury time try by Stephen Hayes gave them an 8-3 home win over Clanwilliam in their Third Round tie. Sean Bourke put Galbally ahead with a drop goal on 65 minutes, but Niall Leahy levelled with a penalty on 78 minutes.
Extra time looked on the cards but Hayes struck to book Galbally their place in the quarter finals.

A try from Derek Houlihan converted by John Sheehan had Highfield 7-0 ahead away to Kilfeacle at half time. The Tipperary side rallied after the break and tries from Tom Doyle, Shane Looby and JJ Cooney and two penalties and a conversion by Gavin Heuston saw Kilfeacle advance.

Young Munster defeated Thurles 23-17 but had to withstand a late rally from the home side. Tries from Peter Meyer and Michael Madden both converted by Paul Downes gave the Limerick side a 14-0 lead but a try by Aidan Burke converted by John Lillis left it 14-7 at half time.
Three penalties from Downes extended the visitors lead to 23-7, but two tries by Owen O’Dwyer had the Limerick side hanging on for victory at the finish.

Cashel followed up their win over holders Shannon in the last round with another dramatic performance as they beat U.C.C. 18-17 at the Mardyke in a thrilling encounter. Chris O’Donnell and Brendan Crosse were Cashel’s try scorers, Conor Holland kicked a drop goal and Ryan O’Donnell added a conversion and a penalty. Emmet McCarthy and Eoin Perry replied with tries for College and Ian O’Donoghue converted both and also added a penalty.

Richmond booked their place in the last eight after they defeated Old Crescent 16-7 at Richmond Park.
All the scoring came in the opening half.
Paul McNamara gave Crescent the lead with a try which Padraig Quinn converted. Richmond hit back with three penalties from Brian Mullins and a conversion of a Tom Madden try.
