Junior Club Roundup

Clonmel have retained their Munster Junior League title, Abbeyfeale are the Second Division champions and Cobh Pirates are also promoted. Ennis are relegated to the Third Division, Youghal win the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final and Cork Constitution are the Munster Second League champions.

Clonmel made sure of their third successive title with a 34-5 bonus point away win over Muskerry.
Tries from Mark Corby and Luke Hogan and a Conor Cooney conversion had Clonmel 12-0 ahead after sixteen minutes. Joe Treacy scored a try for Muskerry but a Cooney penalty left it 15-5 at half time.
Further tries from Neville Melbourne, Cooney and Tony Cantwell along with two Cooney conversions ensured victory for the Tipperary side.

Bandon’s outside hopes of their first title ended when they lost away to Galbally 21-18 in a thrilling contest. Bandon led 15-14 at half time. Brendan Childs, Danny Hayes and Stephen Hayes scored tries for the County Limerick side and Jack O’Mullane converted all three. Richard Walsh got all of Bandon’s points two tries, two penalties and a conversion.

Old Christians still remain bottom after their 26-20 away defeat by Kilfeacle, but they have two games still to play.
Their failure to convert any of their tries proved costly as tries from Dave O’Driscoll, Geoff Hodder, Niall McCarthy and John Purcell had the visitors 20-14 ahead at half time. Stephen Quirke and Pat Ryan replied with tries for Kilfeacle and Gavin Heuston converted both. Isaco Peato and Cian Ryan added tries after the break and Heuston kicked one conversion.

Clonakilty looked on course for their third successive victory as they led Richmond 17-6 at half time with tries from Thomas Ogie Scannell and Alex O’Mahony. Ciaran Calnan converted both and also added a penalty. Richmond who had two penalties from Breen Bennett in the opening half added tries from Shane Halpin, Sean Bennett and Stephen Collins and a Breen Bennett penalty and conversion saw them run out 23-17 winners to finish in the top four and secure a place in next season’s All Ireland Junior Cup.

St Senan’s defeated Newcastle West 56-32 in a game that produced fourteen tries. Brian Collins scored three tries, Warren Kelly and Emile Maffat got two each, Tom Cronin, Tom Galvin and Niall Mallon also scored tries for Senan’s. Brian Collins kicked three conversions. Dave Foley, Sean Herlihy, Donal Egan and Sean Leahy replied with tries for Newcastle West and Herlihy kicked three conversions and two penalties.

Skibbereen finished their campaign with a 23-18 home win over Clanwilliam. The visitors led 10-3 at half time with a Graham Roche try and a conversion and a penalty from Niall Leahy to a Denis McCarthy penalty.
Skibb’ had second half tries from Ritchie Byrne and Dave Jennings with McCarthy converting both and also adding another penalty. Kieran Merrigan scored a try for Clanwilliam and Leahy added a second penalty.

In Division Two the top three teams Abbeyfeale, Cobh Pirates and Thurles all had bonus point wins, but it is Abbeyfeale and Cobh Pirates who will be playing in the top flight next season.

Abbeyfeale’s 45-5 home win over Kinsale saw them go up as champions. Derry O’Connor scored three tries and John Murphy, Jake Quirke and Cormac Roche got one each. Stephen Daly kicked six conversions and a penalty. Pat O’Regan was Kinsale’s try scorer.

Cobh Pirates made sure of their return to the top flight with a 95-0 away win over a depleted Castleisland side. Kevin Allen (4), Alan Langford (3), Lee McCarthy (3), Glen O’Sullivan (2), Ruairi Geary, Dave McAuliffe and TJ McSweeney were Cobh’s try scorers. Eamon Ronan and McCarthy kicked ten conversions between them.

Thurles defeated Charleville 61-8 to finish in third place. Nicky Irwin scored two tries for the winners, Larry O’Gorman, Peter Coman, Ciaran Ryan, Aidan Dwyer, Colm Skeehan, Ger McCormack and Shane Moloney being their other try scorers. John Lillis kicked six conversions.

Mallow retained their Second Division status after receiving a walk over from Dungarvan and Tralee also avoided the drop with a 27-18 home win over Presentation.

Jamie Byrne, Nessan Crean, Gavin Peevers and Andy Sheehy were Tralee’s try scorers. Garrett Walsh kicked two conversions and a penalty. Craig Airey and Garreth Airey replied with tries for Pres’ and Craig Airey added two penalties and a conversion.

Ennis defeated Newport 19-0 but it was not enough as they were relegated. Brian Murphy scored two tries and two conversions and Niall Nevin also scored a try for the Clare side

Waterford City defeated Ballincollig 52-12 with two tries each from Dave O’Connor, Stephen Walsh and Damien Kennedy. Michael Hayes contributed a try and six conversions and they were also awarded a penalty try. Danny Gleeson and Dave Power replied with tries for the visitors and Richard Dineen kicked a penalty.

Youghal won the Martin O’Sullivan Cup for the first time with a hard fought 25-15 win over Fermoy at Rathcooney. The sides were tied 12-12 at half time with Alan Frahill-O’Connor and Aaron Daly scoring tries for Youghal and Keith McCarthy kicked a conversion. Dylan Lacey replied with four penalties for Fermoy. Lacey kicked a fifth penalty for Fermoy and Youghal replied with a second try from Frahill-O’Connor and McCarthy added a conversion and two penalties.

Cork Constitution regained the Munster Seconds League title with a 45-12 win over Shannon at Temple Hill.
The home side led 19-7 at half time with tries from Liam O’Connor, Sean Grey and Sonny Dwyer with Eoin Lacey kicking two conversions. Kelvin Browne scored Shannon’s try and Barry McGorey converted.
Sean O’Leary, O’Connor, JJ O’Neill and Dwyer added further tries and Lacey kicked three conversions.

Highfield retained the Dennehy Cup with a 23-3 win over Cork Constitution. Paul Jacquesson, Darren Walsh and Colm Gallagher scored tries for Highfield and Darragh O’Keeffe kicked two penalties and a conversion. Simon Barry kicked a penalty for Constitution.

Mitchelstown began their Kelly Cup campaign with a 14-12 away win over Bandon. Josh Evans and Owen Burke scored tries for the north Cork side and Pat Molloy converted both.
