Junior Club Roundup

1st May 2016 By Munster Rugby

Several local competitions were completed over the weekend as the season nears an end.

Richmond won the Transfield Cup at Dooradoyle on Friday night with an 11-10 win over U.L. Bohemian.
A try from Dylan O’Dwyer and a Brian Mullins penalty had Richmond 8-7 ahead at half time.
The Annacotty side took the lead with a penalty but a second Mullins penalty ten minutes from time earned Richmond victory.

Skibbereen retained their Cork County Cup crown with a 36-16 win over Cobh Pirates at Bandon.
Playing with the wind in the opening half two penalties from Eamon Ronan gave Cobh a 6-5 interval lead. Gavin Coombes scored Skibb’s try.
It was all Skibb’ in the second half with Coombes scoring another try, Richie Byrne got two and Donal Collins one. Denis McCarthy kicked four conversions and a penalty. Aaron O’Flynn and Richard O’Sullivan replied with late tries for Cobh.

Garryowen won the Munster Junior 2 League Cup (Tony O’Flynn Memorial Cup) with a 33-15 win over Mitchelstown at Dooradoyle.
John Landers scored a try for the north Cork side and they were also awarded a penalty try. Pat Molloy kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Highfield won the South Junior 2 Cup for the third successive time with a 23-21 win over Bandon in an exciting final at Bandon.
Andrew Willis opened the scoring with a penalty for Bandon but Highfield hit back with three Darragh O’Keeffe penalties. Willis kept Bandon in the tie with his second penalty.
Five minutes before half time a great forward drive by the west Cork side’s pack saw Kieran Phelan score a try which Willis converted.
On the stroke of half time Eoin Keating finished off powerful work by the Highfield pack with a try and O’Keeffe converted to leave the half time score 16-13 in Highfield’s favour.
Early in the second half despite playing into the wind, Highfield extended their advantage with a try from Mark Spillet which O’Keeffe converted. Willis reduced the margin with a penalty to leave it 23-16.
Deep in injury time a last minute drive by the Bandon pack saw Cian Buttimer score in the corner but the reliable Willis failed to convert to send the game into extra time.
Both David Hayes (Highfield) and Colm Hurley (Bandon) both announced their retirement from the game after the match having given great service to their clubs for several years.

Old Christians who had earlier in the week won the Junior 3 Cup South with a 26-18 win over Midleton, travelled to Crosshaven on Friday night to face the home side in the semi final of the McCarthy Cup, but it was Crosshaven who advanced to meet Midleton in the final on Wednesday night next in Cobh after a 15-5 victory.

Clonmel retained the Dave Dineen Cup with a 42-5 win over Waterpark in the final at Carrick-on-Suir.

Evan Maverly and Jordan Fahy scored tries for Crosshaven; Maverly kicked a penalty and Chris Murray a conversion. Charlie Higgins replied with a try for Christians.
