Thurles welcomed Dungarvan to Loughnagala on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon for what was Thurles’s first home league game of 2016. Thurles were under no illusions that this Dungarvan team iwho are at the bottom of division 2 were out to cause an upset with an away win, but it was the home side that started the better and scored 2 quick tries in the opening 5 mins one thanks to a great block down by Joey Kelly with Ciaran Ryan quickest to react to the block and getting the touchdown. The second shortly after coming from Declan Rahilly who showed good pace and strength to beat off 2 defenders before touching down.. Dungarvan then started to build a few phases but this determined Thurles team held solid and a quick turnover by Dave Kelly on the halfway saw John Lillis find Adrian Bourke with a superb pass and there was on stopping the winger as he dotted down in the corner.
The Dungarvan out half  with the aid of the wind managed to land a well struck drop goal against the run of play to register his team on the score board. Thurles then added 2 futures tries before half time by Joey Kelly and Colm Skehan both getting through a mountain of work during the game. Lillis converting both.
Half time score  31-3

Thurles again came out all guns blazing at the start of the half with 3 unanswered tries from Nicky Irwin, John Lillis and Paddy Phelan diving over for what was an exact replica of his try against Newcastle West in the junior cup.

(Colm Skehan diving over for his try)
John Lillis having a fine day with the boot slotted over from a tight angle. Credit due to this Dungarvan team they kept fighting as well as they could and got a try in the corner thanks to their winger. Before the game was out thurles introduced fresh faces in the pack in the form of young guns Shane Nugent, Rory O Dwyer, Conor Cooney, Dwayne Stanley and not so young Larry O Gorman who was the first sub to make an impact diving over shortly after arriving on the field. John Lillis who was having a fine game scored his third try thanks to a great assist by Peter Coman who beat several defenders on the way. Before the game was over Nicky Irwin and Eoghan Dwyer had their say both scoring some fine individual try’s to top it all off.

Final score 86-10
On behalf of the first team we could like to thanks the supporters and committee for their continue support of the team and the hard work that is being put in week in week out.

U18 Boys
Thurles  RFC 17 – Killarney/Castleisland 0

Thurles u18 boys defended their unbeaten home record for this season in a comprehensive win over a very physical Killarney/Castleisland side. They showed an excellent defensive display in the first half to deny Killarney/Castleisland a score. Twenty five minutes into the game the first score came from Jack Kavanagh who spotted a gap at the side of a ruck and dived over the line. This put Thurles ahead 5 – 0 at half-time. Thurles started strong in the second half with some good ball handling skills leading to a try from Nick Cooney. The try of the game came 5 minutes from the end when David Conway made a great break from the back of a scrum inside his own 22 and off loaded to Darren O Sullivan who scored the try. Man of the Match performance came from Eoin Ryan playing 2nd centre on the day. This was a great performance all round keep up the good work.

Under 18’s
Douglas/Carrigaline 0 v Waterford City 3

In very difficult conditions our ever improving under 18 side came away from Cork with the points on Saturday last. Constant wind and rain made the game a scrappy tight affair. Both sides showed incredible heart & commitment to produce a very entertaining game even if the score line would suggest otherwise.

Douglas/Carrigaline had the better of the first half, playing with a strong wind at their backs the home side controlled territory. City had to rely on the maul, big carries from the forwards and backs to get up the pitch. Every little mistake was punished though by the home sides out half who used his big boot to pin City back time and time again.

City did extremely well to keep the score at nil all at half time. With the wind at our backs we were now the side dominating field position and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. An accidental offside and a knock on would undo us as we went in search of a try.
With 20 minutes remaining Glen Taylor landed a penalty to put us in front. For the next 10 minutes we had to defend heroically to keep out the home side from scoring a try.
In the end we finished the game inside the Douglas/Carrigaline 22 searching for another score. Tough defence from the home side kept us out. The full time whistle was a welcome sound to the city lads.

A very pleasing victory for a squad who were well beaten at the same venue earlier in the season.
Speedy recovery to Cian Lally who received a facial injury.

Under 16’s Pan Munster League
Bandon 12 v Waterford city 10

City travelled down to Bandon looking for their first win in the competition. With the wind and rain at their backs Bandon pressed for the opening score of the game, only to be met by a strong and resolute City defence. Every home side attack was stopped by big hits, and clever counter rucking. City attacked from every turnover which was met by some brave defence by the home team. With the last play of the first half Bandon attacked the City line, and after phase after phase of play the home side deservedly scored the first try of the game. Half time Bandon 5 city 0. City had to start the second half brightly, and so they did. After constant drives and mauls and quick recycling of the ball the impressive David [gingy] White crossed the line to level the game.

Bandon finally got their hands on the ball and moved into the city half, with some intelligent kicking and chasing. Ten minutes later Bandon attacked from deep in their own half moving the play from right to left to the half way line, but the City right wing Cian Wadding read the play well, intercepted and sprinted to the line scoring to the right of the posts. Tom Carney was unlucky with the conversion, striking the inside of the right upright. With three minutes remaining and City leading 10 – 5 Bandon moved into the city 22 and after countless phases of play scored under the posts. The try converted and the end of nail biting, exciting and entertaining encounter. This game was played in great spirit and determination, and both teams did their clubs, coaches and supporters proud.
