Munster Junior League: Waterpark 15-3 Waterford City
Waterford City took on Waterpark for the first time in the Munster Junior league on Sunday in Ballinakill. Both sides were unbeaten in the league and were eager to keep to winning ways. The first half was very tight with both sides going toe to toe and City took the lead with a penalty converted by Michael Hayes. Unfortunately that’s where the scoring finished for City.

In the second half Waterpark upped their game and went over the try line twice. Both sides fought hard but Waterpark ran out winners in the end. Under 18’s The U18’s were away to Dungarvan on Sunday, unfortunately the game had to be abandoned after 10 minutes due to an injury to a Dungarvan player – we hope he makes a quick recovery.

U14s – East Munster League: Dungarvan 15-34 Waterford City
This was an excellent game played in perfect conditions in Dungarvan. City showed their intentions from the start with Ryan McCarthy crossing the line within the first 5 mins for the games opening try, soon after fullback Luke Doyle added the 1st of his four tries on the day with a blistering run which left the defence in his wake. Before the break Dungarvan crossed for a well worked try to leave the score 20-5 at halftime.

An immediate reaction was needed and it came from powerful backrow Alex Byrne who crashed through the line to add the try which Cian Egerton converted. City continued to break down a dogged Dungarvan defence and the score line was stretched to 34-5 with 15 minutes left. At this point Dungarvan took over the game at to their credit playing a well structured and patient brand of rugby which saw them add 2 tries to end the game 34-15 in City's favour. Many thanks to Dungarvan for hosting the game and best of luck to them for the rest of the season. A big well done to our lads continue to improve, next week we finish our 1st phase of the league at home to Carrick.

Ballincollig RFC 24-41 Thurles RFC
The Thurles First XV were back in League action last weekend following their win in the Munster Junior Challenge Shield the week previous. On this occasion they were on the road as they travelled to face a Ballincollig side who had made a promising start to the League campaign. Thurles travelled minus a few of last year’s regulars due to injury and were also sweating on a couple of others prior to kick off but those players came through late fitness tests to take their place. Despite the long journey down to Cork, Thurles started all guns blazing, Captain Eoghan O’Dwyer scored an early try following some great play from Shane McHugh, Luke Kelly and Ciaran Ryan in the pack. This try was followed up quickly by 2 more, the first, an excellent team try which went from left to right and finished excellently by Tommy Connolly in the corner, the second was a great individual try from Nicky Irwin who raced over the line to touchdown under the posts, 2 of the 3 tries were converted by John Lillis for a scoreline of 0-19. Ballincollig started to put a few plays together once they started to get their hands on the ball and were rewarded with a try of their own in the right hand side of the field at the clubhouse end, the kick was missed so the score remained 5-19. Thurles continued to go through the gears up to half time as Aidan Dwyer got in on the scoring with an excellent move worked off a lineout which secured the try bonus point for Thurles, Lillis added the extras and minutes later added a penalty to bring an end to the half’s proceedings with scoreline of 5-29 in favour of Thurles.

Ballincollig rallied together following the half time break and were in a couple of well worked tries early on, both of which were converted to reduce the deficit to 19-29. Thurles got themselves back on track with some great attacking play from Peter Coman, Tommy Stevens and Mark Cummins bringing play inside the Ballincollig 22. Following an excellent lineout from the forwards, it was Outhalf Aidan Dwyer who reaped the rewards once again, touching down having made his way past a number of would be tacklers, Lillis did the honours again with the conversion to push out the lead once again, 19-36. The home side were not done at this stage, the win may have been out of reach but they had the try bonus point in their sights, following some more great work from their pack, they eventually crossed the line to ensure they were not going to finish up empty handed despite being comprehensively beaten. Thurles themselves kept working until the final whistle, Dave Kelly, Rory O’Sullivan and Shane Moloney all playing their part when introduced, with the latter getting on the score sheet on what was his seasonal debut, this try came from excellent combination play from the backs and forwards with Shane touching down in the corner to finish the days scoring at 24-41 to Thurles. Thurles have no game this coming weekend as they have a well earned break which will give players with injuries an extra week to get back into contention. Our next game is a home fixture versus Ennis on Sunday the 6th of November. It was great to see the travelling support in Ballincollig on Sunday, it was greatly appreciated by both the players and management and we hope to see all the same faces and more at our upcoming games.

Thurles Scorers: Aidan Dwyer (2 Tries), Eoghan O’Dwyer, Nicky Irwin, Tommy Connolly & Shane Moloney (1 Try Each), John Lillis (4 Conversions, 1 Penalty).

Eoghan O’Dwyer (c) 13. Peter Coman 14. Tommy Connolly 15. John Lillis Subs Used: Dave Kelly, Rory O’Sullivan & Shane Moloney.

U18s – Thurles 24-26 Garyowen
Thurles were narrowly defeated by Garyowen on Sunday. Garyowen got off to a flying start with a try under the posts. Thurles started extremely slow going in at half time 21 nil down. Thurles showed some great heart in the second half with a never say die attitude. Trys came from Conor O Hagan, Ciaran Murphy, Nick Cooney & Paddy McGrath. Jack Flanagan kicked 2 conversions to put Thurles 24 – 21 ahead. With the last play of the game Garyowen got in in the corner to close the game. Some good displays by Ciaran Murphy & Seamus Holohan on the day. Back to the drawing board Tuesday night lads.

U16s – Thurles v Cashel
Thurles U16s played Cashel at home in their second game of the league on Sunday. In a tight affair synonymous with these local derbies Thurles edged home 15 to 10. Cashel started strongly from the kick off with their winger taking advantage of poor Thurles handling and defence to run back to within 5 yards of Thurles line. An excellent counter ruck by Thurles, one of the positive aspects of the Thurles performance, turned Cashel over and Thurles cleared to safety. Having recovered from this 5 minutes later Thurles were on the scoreboard. From a scrum near half way outhalf Ed Connolly in a well rehearsed move fed full back James Devaney who outflanked the Cashel defence and several tackle attempts to score his first of two tries. 10 minutes later he repeated this with a similar long range break this time to score under the posts with Ed Connolly adding the extras. Thurles led 12 to 0 at this stage and were controlling the game well with good line out ball and tactical and defensive kicking. However Cashel were full of running and ran everything and handled well in the backs. From a very defensible scrum on the Thurles 10 m line Cashel outhalf ran across the field untouched creating an overlap for his centre to score almost untouched. This made the half time score 12 to 5 in favour Thurles.

The second half started poorly for Thurles failing to deal with the kick off. A feature of Thurles play on the day. The second half was dominated by Cashel with them having more field position in the Thurles red zone. But Thurles did manage to add to their tally with a 30 metre penalty effort from in front convert by James Devaney to stretch the home side out to 15. This was crucial as Cashel managed to score a try 5 minutes from time. Their big number 8 running in from half way leaving some feeble tackle attempts by the home side in his wake. Luckily for Thurles it was too little too late. Thurles pack performed well particularly in the set piece, particularly in the lineout and at ruck time and it was a very committed performance all round.

Newcastle West 34-5 Cobh Pirates
After 20 minutes in Cullinagh last Sunday it did not look like the above score line was possible. Our visitors, Cobh travelled with confidence and tore into the game right from the off. Their back play was causing NCW all sorts of problems and they ran in a try after 18 minutes. An alert Michael O’Leary managed to limit the damage by blocking down the conversion leaving Pirates with a 5-0 lead. It took a Sean Herlihy penalty on 32 minutes to steady the ship but from there NCW took over. Cian Hinchy finished off a great move in the 40th minute and Sean again added the points with a great conversion from the side-line. Taking a 10-5 lead to the 50th minute the ref finally blew the half time whistle.

Once Tommy Kelliher glided in for the second try on 45 minutes, with Sean Herlihy again adding the extras, it looked like NCW had settled into the task. The try of the day came 10 minutes later after some great breaks and offloading by Sean Murphy and Sean Ivess released the rampaging prop, Declan Moloney to finish the move from the Cobh 22. Leading 24-5 and with the bonus point a real possibility now, NCW upped the work rate even further. James Corbett who was outstanding all afternoon carried and tackled like a demon and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions. Cobh to their credit defended manfully, holding up NCW attackers on a couple of occasions but the pressure eventually broke their resistance and Sean Herlihy scampered in from the back of a ruck to secure the bonus point. He added the conversion and had time to kick another 3 pointer to leave a full time score of 34-5. Overall an excellent performance from the lads against a tough and speedy Pirates side.

Scorers: Cian Hinchy, Sean Herlihy, Tom Kelliher, Declan Moloney 1 try each. Sean Herlihy 4 conversions & 2 penalties

Newcastle West RFC: Sean Ivess, Cian Hinchy, Sean Murphy, Sean Neville, Michael O’Leary, Tom Kelliher, Sean Herlihy, Declan Moloney, Sean Corbett, Shane Magner, Padraig Fogarty, Gerald Griffin, James Corbett, Hayden Dillon, Gary O’Donnell. U16s Newcastle West/Estuary RFC 19-12 Nenagh Ormond RFC
This was our second game in the Munster league and we were travelling with a strong team. Though we had a few players out injured and unavailable to start. the players that were picked to replace them played an outstanding game. Before the game there was a minute's silence observed by both teams and supporters prior to kick-off For Anthony Foley. We started well and from the kick off we put Nenagh under pressure in their own twenty two. we settled well into the game and were defending and attacking with great intensity which paid off in the 8th minute of the game. When received a scrum and our number 8 playing in a twenty three shirt in a mark of respect both teams retired their no 8 shirt for the game to Anthony Foley. In great Foley style David Massey picked off the back of the scrum and got over the line for the opening try. This was well converted by Jack Grimes our out half. We kept up the pressure with great carries from Kevin Sheahan Christopher Walshe and Brian Hartigan however we lost Kevin Sheahan to an early injury and was replaced by Liam Callahan had a great game when he Came on carried and passed well throughout the game. Sean Bourke who started his first game this season was tackling and playing well at openside flanker. Diarmuid O Flynn our captain leading by example with good defensive work and go forward ball was immense in his display. Unfortunately we gave 2 penalties in our twenty two with ten minutes left in first half Nenagh got a try in the corner but failed to convert the try. We were ill disciplined in last 5 minutes and Nenagh went over for another try in the last minute of the first half.

Nenagh led at half-time by 12 to 7. Our backline was playing well and felt they were on top with a good display from our centres Tom Murphy and Oliver Lynch with great work by our two wings Jamie Mullane and John O Connor. In the second half we were under tremendous pressure with good defensive work from Daniel Collins and Killian Collins and the forwards we with stood this onslaught. With ten minutes to go it looked like Nenagh were going to edge this one. A glimmer of hope happened after a break by Diarmuid O’Flynn and a neat pass to Killian Collins who offloaded in the tackle but deemed to be a forward pass to John O’Connor. From the resulting scrum Nenagh broke but were turned over again we broke down the left with John O Connor stepping inside off-loading to Diarmuid O’Flynn who off loaded to Turlough O’Connor who gave a long looping pass to send Tom Murphy up the centre with his flamboyant side step and turn of pace he got in behind the Nenagh Defence to touch down under the posts. Jack Grimes Kicked the conversion and we were in front with six minutes to go. Cian Doody was introduced for Jamie Mullane with a small bit of shuffling Cian went in flanker jack Grimes went centre and Oliver Lynch went on the wing. we were under pressure from Nenagh again but they dually knocked on in our twenty two which we ran and held on to the ball we got two Penalties which our scrum half Kieran Carmody took and sent our forwards pilling forward. Kieran who controlled the game from scrum half all through the match gave a good delivery to our full back Daniel Normoyle who had an outstanding game at full back. He chipped forward with Diarmuid O’Flynn retrieving the ball off loaded to Christopher Walshe. He laid the ball back on the five metre line where Daniel Collins dually accepted the challenge to score and got over in the corner for our last try. the conversion was missed and with that final whistle was blown on a momentous game for this group of lads that is now two on the trot and we are already looking forward to our next game in two weeks where most of our players who are injured will hopefully return. 1.Kevin Sheahan 2. Bryan Hartigan 3. Christopher Walshe 4. Daniel Collins 5. Killian Collins 6. Sean Bourke 7. Diarmuid O’Flynn 23. David Massey 9. Kieran Carmody 10. Jack Grimes 11. Jamie Mullane 12. Oliver Lynch 13. Tom Murphy 14. John O’Connor 15. Daniel Normoyle 16. Turlough O’Connor 17. Liam Callanan 18. Cian Doody Under 14’s Our under 14s travelled to Nenagh on Sunday. A minutes silence was offered in honour of Anthony Foley and the no.8 Jersey was retired for the match by both teams as a mark of respect. The boys did their best on the day, with two tries from Donal and with ball in hand they looked impressive. Unfortunately our defending needs a bit of work. Most impressive on the day were Ian, Thomas, Shane, Oran, Conor S, Phillip, Conor H, Tom and Jamie. Brian Og led by example as captain, also Dylan considering he is only a month into the game is growing in confidence and ability. This group of young men are improving all the time, scoring 6 tries in last 2 games.

Team: Odhran Brosnan, Conor Heenan, Phillip Brennan, Brian Og Scully, Ian O’Connor, Jamie O’Brien, Dylan Madigan, Thomas Murphy, Conor Shannahan, Tom McMahon, Shane Copse, John Collins, Oran Ryan, Adam Grimes and Donal Bourke.
