Under 17 Rugby
Fermoy travelled to Cobh on Saturday hoping to pick up our first win in the league but we came up against a very determined and well drilled Cobh side. For the second week in a row we travelled with just 16 players. We kicked off with the wind at our back but straight away the physically bigger Cobh pack had us under pressure. Fermoy managed to soak up that pressure for the first 15 minutes but eventually the Cobh outside center broke through the line and scored his first try of the day and he proved to be the key difference between the sides going on to score two more tries. We conceded two more tries in the first half but managed some great phase play ourselves from a line out which eventually lead to our own try from Ben Clancy who was immense on the day.

The second half was a mirror of the first but with Fermoy now applying some pressure of our own but just not getting the rewards for it. Cobh scored again and ran out winners on a score of 24 – 7 in the end. As a coaching team we are very proud of the efforts being put in by the squad and if I was to mention any player in this report I would have to mention them all one to sixteen for the effort they put in on the day. Our forwards, though the smaller pack, managed to win ball against the head in the scrum and disrupted at least five of the Cobh line outs. The backs defended really well and played some good attacking rugby when we had the ball. It’s easy to forget that five or six of this team only took up rugby this year. We have Midleton at home this weekend so fingers crossed we can turn the tide.

Womens Rugby

Fermoy v Abbeyfeale – Sunday 4th November

Fermoy Lionesses had their third league match against Abbeyfeale on Sun 4/11/12 at the showgrounds in Fermoy where we saw Fermoy win 29-5. The game was due to be played in Abbeyfeale but due to pitch flooding, we would like to thank the girls from Abbeyfeale for rescheduling and travelling up to the showgrounds.

Fermoy got off to an early start, with a great try off second centre, Chrstine Bruen who pushed and fought well to land a try under the goal posts which was converted by flyhalf Louise Buttimer. Abbeyfeale answered back and with quick hands from their backs their scrum half was able to make a break for it, resulting in a try. The Fermoy pack then worked well together and a great push forward from Patricia Carroll saw Fermoy land their second try, converted again by Louise.

The second half saw Fermoy a lot more composed, and a penalty to Fermoy resulted in Meadbh O’Callaghan pushing forward and securing Fermoy’s third try. Great defense from Fermoy kept Abbeyfeale away from the try line throughout the second half. Great interplay between the backs and forwards led to a chance down the left secured by Noirin McHugh. The last try of the match saw Louise Buttimer secure the fifth try for the Fermoy team.

Well done to all the Lionesses on another great win, was great to have such high numbers and all team players played exceptionally well. Thanks again to Abbeyfeale for rescheduling and travelling down.

The Lionesses are also holding a team fundraiser table quiz night on Nov 25th in their sponsers Kerins Bar, starting at 7pm. We would really appreciate any support and its sure to be a good night!

Midleton 12 – 3 Fermoy

Fermoy lost out in this top of the table clash to a strong unbeaten Midleton side in Midleton last Sunday. In a hard fought, close contest Midleton only sealed the victory with a try 5 minutes from time. The home side took the lead midway through the first half with a converted try.

Fermoy’s Dylan Lacey reduced the deficit to four points with a well taken penalty before the break. The Fermoy backline looked sharp all day in particular DJ Ducey and Dave Callanan.

In the second half Fermoy had a lot more possession in the Midleton half but Fermoy failed to capitalise on this and the home side sealed the victory when they crossed over for their second try of the day. Mark Cotton, Eoin Murphy and Oisin Hegarty scrummed very well against a much heavier Midleton pack.

Great to see Michael Hickey, Ethan McCormack and Chad Pelley step up to the mark and show what they are made of.

Fermoy 28 – Scariff 13

On Sunday last Fermoy played host to Scariff RFC of Co Clare in our third league game of the season. After a slow start Scariff took the lead with a penalty from Conor McNamara which went in off the inside of the left hand post.
Fermoy got more into the game after this and Stephen Dunne went over for a try and after another 10 minutes Peter Stapleton got our second try of the game when he went in for a try in the corner. Fermoy had most of the play in the first half and at the interval lead 10-3.

Two minutes into the second half Fermoy added to their try count when Tom Griffin (on his first J1 game) went over for a well taken try in the corner. The scoreline was soon added to with a Joe Lee penalty to put Fermoy 18-3 up after 10 minutes of the second half. We knew that Scariff would come back at us and this they duly did with 2 tries from Robbie Madden. Fermoy needed to get back into the game and after some good team play Peter Stapleton got his second and Fermoy’s fourth try of the afternoon. Courtney Canning added to the scoreline with another well taken try.
Fermoy held out Scariff for the remainder of the game to leave a final scoreline of 28-13 and Fermoy continue to lead the way at the top of the table.

It was great to see such a good crowd at the Showgrounds on Sunday and we hope for another good turnout next Sunday when Fermoy welcome Waterford to the same venue for the semi-final of the Martin O Sullivan Cup again at 2.30

It’s been a busy start to the season in Europe’s Most Westerly rugby club, the minis, 13’s, 15’s, 17’s and seniors have all had a busy schedule since the season kicked off.

The u11’s are the pride of the club after they took on St.Senans RFC in Thomond Park recently in a half time game between Munster and Zebre. The lads showed great skills and flair and showed that the West really is alive when it comes to rugby.

The u13’s have had a mixed start to the season with a few losses but have showed great heart and determination in all their games. One to watch for the future: Conor Flannery

The u15’s had a great start to their season running up big scores against Iveragh Eagles and Abbeyfeale, since then two defeats on the run against Tralee and Killarney have halted progress. Captain Sean O Lúing and Shane O’Conner are two future stars here.

The u17’s who have amalgamated with Castleisland had a tough start against Tralee where they were well beaten, however, playing with 13 players against Killarney’s 15 last week the lads had a stunning 31-35 victory against all the odds. P.J Hand grabbed 4 tries on his way to a man of the match performance.

The u19’s have played a couple of friendlies against The West Munster RDS and St Columbas College in Dublin, we are struggling for numbers at this age group and any new players would be more than welcome. The senior team have also had a difficult start to the season with a couple of losses, the lads are playing some great rugby but some bad luck coupled with a lack of experience has seen some close games go the wrong way.

Briain O Murchú from Ventry has just been selected for the Munster u18 Clubs Squad. Briain has been involved with the West Munster Regional Development Squad for the past two years and has excelled since joining the squad. Selection for this squad is a massive honour and a real credit to Briain, his family, coaches and all the players in Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne. Well done Briain.

Training for Senior players takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm, with u13’s, 15’s and 17’s all training on Thursdays. The Mini’s train on a Saturday at 11am.

Upcoming Fixtures:

Saturday 10th October: U13’s v Listowel 11am (H)
U15’s v Listowel 11am (H)
U17’s v Listowel 12am (H)
